We stayed at this hotel twice during our time in Peru, both before and after our trip to the Sacred Valley. It has a good location, and is in a stunning building, an old Inca palace. It has five stars and it's quite easy to see why - but somehow we didn't particularly like it. On our first visit we were in one of the modern rooms near the back of the hotel. It was a good size and had everything you'd expect but was rather bland and anonymous - no sense of being in such an historical spot. The room we had on our second visit was much better. It was on the first floor and in the old part of the building, so we did get a real sense of history. But on this occasion we were only there for one night and didn't have any time to appreciate it! So if you're coming here do try to get one of these older rooms, otherwise you might just as well stay somewhere cheaper. Being five star too, the prices in the bar and restaurant are very high, although the coffee shop was more reasonable. The buffet breakfast however, which is included, is very good and will give you an occasion to eat in the restaurant with its old Inca walls.
The Inca walls mentioned above can also be seen in the bar - but on the other hand you can see these walls all over Cusco without paying five star prices for them! | | | | Casa Andina Catedral: Great location, bad rooms Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
After our stay at Casa Andina San Blas, we had good hopes for this hotel. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. Once again, we were given a bad room, this time on the ground floor, behind the reception right next to the luggage storage room. It had a view over the inside wall (the corridor), a hole in the floor under the carpet and was so moist that two hours after we took a shower, the bathroom mirror was still fogged. We complained and were told that there were no other rooms available. I mentioned it was our honeymoon and that we would like a nicer room with a view and on a higher floor. We were told that would be arranged and that when we came back from our our tour all our bags would have been moved. To our great surprise, when we came back, we had been moved to a room on the first floor, with no view and MUCH smaller than the one we had before... We went down to complain and after waiting over one hour and hearing complaints from at least 3 other guests about the same problem, we were given a slightly larger room, still without a view. We saw 4 other rooms (for instance the ones that had been given to the other complaining guests) and they were all better than the one they had given us. I complained to the agency that had booked the hotel and the manager called me the next day apologizing and offering to give us a better room. We refused as it was the second of a three-night stay and we did not feel like having to pack everything to change again. He tried to make it up to us, which was nice, but I can't help feeling we were treated as not-important guests, even though it was our honeymoon. Location of the hotel is great, right on one of the corners of Plaza d'Armas, but service was not good. Front-desk staff kept smiling and saying they understood our problem with the rooms, while at the same time saying they could not do anything about it (even if the same person had promised to give us a better room). Casa Andina San Blas is a far superior hotel than this one.
If you get a good deal it could be a good option for its location, otherwise, make sure you are guaranteed a good room (bear in mind that rooms facing the street are noisy). | | | | Hosteria Rumichaca - Urubamba: A Gourmet's Paradise in Urubamba | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Hosteleria Rumichaca is a five-star, white-gloved bed and breakfast nestled in a quite village near Urubamba. We stayed there for two nights and were the only guests, so we had the wonderfully friendly hosts (Jose and Irene) to ourselves. But even if we had to share them this would have been a great stay. First, we were met at the Cusco airport by Jose, who drove us to Sachsayhuaman, a llama farm and Pisac on the way to his hosteria. Compensating for the altitude, we planned only to rest during the afternoon, and the splendidly-appointed bed and breakfast was a great place to do that. Andrea wandered the garden with Jose as I watched the hummingbirds flit among the flowers. We played with their dogs (immaculately groomed white samoyeds) and drank pisco sours by the fire. Jase has traveled around the world, has a degree in engineering and speaks flawless English, so we were well-entertained with conversation. Then it was time for dinner, where Irene showed of her skills of making fine gourmet cuisine out of locally-grown produce. We had lamb from the hills, unfermented corn juice and local vegetables for dinner. Sadly, we had to be mindful about how much we ate because of the altitude. The beds were big, the bathrooms large and modern and our room opened out to a patio. Our hosts arranged for our horseback ride and train tickets to Machu Picchu and back to Cusco. In Cusco we lodged for another two nights at their property run by Romero, Jose's brother. And they included all of this for three people in a bill that totaled $1300, which comes out to $80 a person day. This is not bad when you figure how much transportation is thrown in! | | | | Casa Andina San Blas: Great hotel in a nice area Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This was our first hotel during our stay in Cusco and is located in the San Blas neighborhood. This is where you can find many small craft shops and is also where local artists hang out (or so we were told). The hotel is very nice, modern and stylish. Some rooms are obviously better than other, but if you are lucky, you can get a room with a nice view over the city (we got a bad view at first and then changed rooms). Service was very good and attentive, both front desk and restaurant personnel. This is clearly one of the better hotels in Cusco. It is only about 5-10 minutes away from the main square which can be easy to reach, except if you are having problems with the altitude as there are some stairs to climb. In any case, a taxi will cost 2 or 3 soles (day and night rate), which is less than $1. I definitely recommend this hotel.
