Quito to Cusco......overland?

by ojosverde47

I plan to go from Quito to Cusco in mid January.....flying is so expensive...anyone know if going overland is feasible?

It is feasible, however January is the height of the rainy season, especially as you near Cusco so you might get stuck in a mud slide or worse. Might be wise to bus it to Lima and then fly. You should be able to get a decent fare in January.

Agree with Sam. Check with TACA and StarPeru, though LAN Peru has more frequencies Lima-Cusco.

Quito to Cusco is doable but I think the suggestion of flying at least one way from Lima to or from Cusco makes good economic and practical sense. One way flights cost half as much as roundtrip flights so you have flexibility. (The flight is about an hour and 20 minutes and the bus is 20-28 hours.) You could go one way by bus and the other by air and can breakup the road journey to experience a number of interesting sights along the way. I would suggest that you also breakup your trip from Quitos to Lima.

Good luck. bob

Travel Tips for Cusco

Enjoy your time in Cusco

by darthmilmo

Pace yourself! One can argue that Cusco and the Sacred Valley is one of the best spots on Earth. There is so much history in this region that one cannot be rushed. Devide the days you have according to your likes and try not to jam too much at one time. I ended up spending about 3 weeks in the Sacred Valley and Cusco. I loved the region. For those staying a while, I highly reccomend the Boleto Turistico, which offers a consolidated ticket to many attractions in the area. There is a special price for students and a general admission price for the rest.

The true beauty of Cusco lies not in the museums and attractions, but in the streets themsleves. Just spend a day or two walking the sights and taking in the city. Check out the architecture, which is made up of unique Incaic and Spanish trends. It's a unique and amazing city. Drinking the delicious fruit juices in el Mercado San Pedro

e.g. Aji de Gallina

by kare_ab

For most European is quite a strange combination to eat rice and potatoes together, however it's tasty! :-D

Whenever possible try something new. Most dishes taste nicer then they might look like. (pics of "Aij de Gallina")

In most restaurants you can get menus way cheaper then a "normal" dish. (for around 2-3 Soles)

Raqchi Archaeological Site--Church

by JessieLang

There is a nice little Catholic Church just outside the archaeological site. It is still in use, serving the small population living by the site.

Have a look at the church while you are visiting the ruins.

an English pub run by an Aussie in Cusco

by richiecdisc about Cross Keys

Though right on the Plaza de Armas, this is a great getaway from the madness of the main square. As soon as I walked in here, I felt relaxed and we wound up spending hours talking to the manager, an Aussie who married a Peruvian and made Cusco his home. I am not a big proponent of escpaping the local scene but sometimes it can be nice. Looks English but feels Australian. Good happy hour prices and the best Pisco sour in town.

Terrific Trout

by stripeykelly about Pacha Papas

Tucked on the San Blas square, you entre through a passageway that has some rather beautiful jewellery, before going into the courtyard, which has an open wood stove and you can also sit there. We sat out, near the stove and under the stars. It offers the usual food that you get in the ?traditional? restaurants in Cusco, guinea pig, various fish etc. The trout though was the best I have eaten so far.

I ordered the trout baked with wild fennel. It was beautiful, baked to perfection in the wood stove, moist and sweet, with perfectly cooked veg and lovely creamy mashed potatoes. The portions are of a good size, but the tast is lovely. Trout with wild fennel. As above, sweet, moist and whole! With the perfect vegetable accompaniments.
