cruz del sur

by adorabel3

I'm thinking of traveling from arequipa to cusco on the night bus via cruz del sur. I've read in the travel guides and some forums that it is NOT safe to travel by night. I'm alone. Can anyone advise?

I hope Noel aka "nhoolb" comes to this forum question soon as he knows a lot about these buses. Overall, it sounds like a very time-consuming ride.

You may want to check the Arequipa-Puno-Cusco flights & see if that's a better option time-wise. Goodluck & enjoy beautiful Peru!

Thanks, I hope he'll come to this forum soon too. The reason I chose the bus cos it's a cheaper route. But safter comes first. Thanks for your help.

Well...here I am.... :-)

I don't think it's completely unsafe, Cruz del Sur is a good company. However, it's a 10-12 hours busride but cheaper (USD 30) than flying (USD 100).

Depends on your budget of course. I, personally, would opt for flying....

Check my transportation pages for more details and websites.

It's fine to travel by night in Peru. I have done it on many occassions. The only thing I will say is this: don't travel with much cash in your pockets and keep your credit card in a really safe place (like an inside pocket or money belt). Biggest danger (more of an annoyance really) is pickpockets.

if you are worried, keep your important belongings close, wrapped around a limb or in your lap and not in the overhead compartment.

cruz del sur is good as i remember.

I'm aware that cruz de sur is a good company. It got me worried cos of the stories I heard. Thanks Noel, will check out your website.

I will remember not to show my cash. I'll be visiting Peru in June, which is winter season. I'll wrap up myself with layers of winter clothes!

Thanks for all your help. I wish myself a safe & pleasant trip.

Travel Tips for Cusco

Quick Pics in Cusco

by chrissyalex

Have some of your film developed in Cusco. We found a photography shop just off the Plaza de Arms which processes one-hour-photos for only eleven soles (less than $4 US) This is less than half the price of having a roll developed in my hometown. We decided to try it out and had a roll processed They really did a wonderful job and the next day,we had some more rolls developed there. The picture on the left was processed there.
Directions: From the Plaza de Armas, Walk north up the street named Triunfo Hatunrunmiyou a short way. It located on the right and has a one-hour photo sign out front. The name of this store is Nishiyama Laboratorio Fotografico Included in the price of the film processing is a very cute mini album to store your photos in with a picture of Machu Picchu on it.

Different types of clothes

by Urzu

If you're going to spend a few days in Cusco and around the area I strongly recomment to take with you many different types of clothes that you can layer. During the day it's very likely that it will be sunny and warm-ish, you can walk around in a T-shirt, though if it's cloudy it might get somewhat fresh or plain cold. At night it can get VERY VERY cold, so you'll need a nice coat if you don't want to get sick!
Also take a pair of good & comfortable shoes to do all the walking!

calle san blas,on the way to s.blas church...

near,see also small nazarenas square
have a walk,in the evening, far from tourists and meet cusco people!

To Cusco by plane

by schlumpf

From Puerto Maldonado or from Lima, the easiest way to reach Cusco is by plane.
I took both routes and always with my favourite airline company (LAN Peru).

I won't reccomande you the other line "Aerocontinente" as I had bad experiences with them, as they lost twice my luggages!!!! It could be a case...yes...nut just one time! I heard other people that had my same experience...so, if you can choose the LAN.

The flight from Lima costs beetween 30USD and 40USD (40 mins) and the flight from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco costs you beetween USD 40 and USD 45 (50mins).

You can buy a ticket in any agency, but before to choose, check some of them, as there could be the possibility to caugh some discounts!

The wellknown area to have a cheap meal!

by schlumpf

A nice area where to eat in Cusco is called "Avenida del Sol", where all the travel agency are located.

For sure, this could be also a "tourist trap" as you will never find a local people coming here to have a eat, but at least is pretty cheap (unbelievable!)

You just need to walk throug this street and at certain point lot of guys and girls will stop you offering a menu for the restaurant they are working in....

The restaurants are located somewhere near the Avenida del Sol, and the tipical menu they are offering is somehting like this:

- one entrance
- one main course
-water and a glas of wine (nice wine!!)
-sweet

for less then 2USD

So I guess is pretty convenient, altough too "touristic"....
