Wayllabamba campsite
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The first campsite on the trail is Wayllabamba (3100 m - 10137ft). There is no hot water, but there are showers with cold water, WC and a tiny shop for candies... Nice landscape.

You normally sleep in tents of 2, with a sleeping bg and a thin matress. I was travelling alone, so a guy of the group slept with me. That was only the first night, as on the 2nd day he felt ill (altitude sickness) and had to be taken back to Cuzco by several porters. Poor guy but lucky me! :-))

Rarely do we splurge on hotels when we travel. But, at Machu Picchu we did and it was worth it! The Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn in Aguas Calientes is a great experience unto itself and we would recommend a jouney to stay there even if it didn't have the famous ruins just a 20-minute bus ride away. When I was in college, I worked at a five-star hotel in Florida, so I can say with confidence that the service here was top-notch. All of the customer service employees come from Lima or Cusco, and they speak English well. All of the other employees speak Spanish and NEVER fail to greet you no matter where you are. The food was locally produced and of high quality -- we definitely recommend getting the breakfast/dinner meal plan. The rooms are well appointed and stylishly decorated. Andrea and Sarah loved the fragrant soaps and creams that were left in our huge bathroom. In all of our travels, this is now our favorite hotel -- bar none! Oh, if you are choosing between the Machu Picchu Pueblo inn and the Sanctuary Lodge located directly at the ruins, we spoke to a few people who were in the process of spending nights at both. Except for the location, they all rated the Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn (Inkaterra) as the superior hotel. One word of caution, however. You are still in Peru, so don't be carelesss with your valuables even at a top-notch hotel like this. While we were there, anopther guest had money taken from a wallet he left unattended in his room.

Despite the high quality of food, service and lodging, our favorite part of the hotel had to be the hummingbirds. They are abundant both in numbers and in variety of species. It is said that up to 14 species of hummingbird can be seen on the lush hotel grounds, but we only saw four. However, that was plenty as the quick little birds are spectacular. We got up early every morning to watch the birds as the feeders were put out. I will add a travelogue of hummingbird photos that we took.

Hotel Macchu Picchu Las Ruinas: At the Foot of the Ruins....Las Ruinas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed overnight at the Hotel Ruinas Machu Picchu, which at that time was (and may still be) the only hotel that sits right at the foot of the Machu Picchu ruins. You can't beat the location, because you can literally walk up to Machu Picchu from your hotel room. It had a very Andean sensation to it and I recall feeling overwhelmed with relief that we'd agreed to pay the extra money to stay here (at the time I believe we paid $99).

It was the absolute BEST hot shower I've EVER taken in my life (and the longest - we'd just spent 4 days trekking through the Andes and hadn't had a shower in about the same amount of time!), and the dining room was decent, with good food and bottled water (wine and beer available!) served by friendly staff. The rooms were small but clean, with cable television! But the very best thing about this hotel was the beautiful view outside our windows. The alternative to this hotel is the nearby town of Aguascalientes (which offers some hot springs activity - but the town itself has a run-down feel to it.) Staying in Aguascalientes is less expensive than staying at Ruinas, but you must factor in the taxi ride and also your schedule. If you're serious about Machu Picchu, Ruinas is the way to go. Remember this!

I'd read all the tips about this hotel and was really looking forward to our visit. Luckily I wasn't disappointed. The room was fabulous - large, tastefully decorated (loved the colourful throws on the beds!) and beautifully set among the trees and flowers. The scented oils to warm in lamp rings were a really nice touch. Dinner in the restaurant was really good (probably one of the best meals we had in Peru) and breakfast was lovely too. We only stayed one night and wished it had been at least two as there's more to this place than its convenience for the bus for the ruins (only a few minutes walk). We managed to fit in a nature walk (included in the half board package) - one of the hotel's naturalists took us on an hour long walk through the hotel's own orchid gardens and explained these fascinating plants in great detail. We were even given magnifying glasses with which to study the most minute!

But the highlight has to be the humming birds! There are so many varieties, all of them stunning. we watched for ages and managed to get some pretty good photos of them at the feeders. Just one downside perhaps - the railway line runs through the hotel grounds and you have to cross it to get to the cafe. But when you get there you can get some lovely fresh fruit juices, and free internet access.

La Cabaņa Hostel: Not the best choice in Aguas Calientes

We stayed one night at La Cabaņa Hostel, located in Aguas Calientes-Machupicchu where you get off the train, on the recommendation of a member of IgoUgo. Cost was $30 a night. The staff spoke decent English, but were nowhere near as friendly as this other person experienced. The hostel is up a steep hill, squished in between stores and restaurants on the busy pedestrian road. No scenic views to speak of. Breakfast was included, but only consisted of bread, instant coffee/tea and juice.

We were first given a room with a balcony overlooking the street (#18). The room was clean and decent enough, although we had to ask for toilet paper and there was no soap. But the street was noisy so we moved to #14, in the middle of the hall but with a window to the interior staircase. This room had several flaws: the curtains had to be closed with a safety pin, the bedlamp on the left was permanently turned off, as the headboard was fastened against it, and the bathroom door could not open all the way due to lack of space. Also, the toilet mechanism was broken and we had to keep the tank open to pull on the chain (we were too tired to ask for it to be fixed). Also we requested a fan that never appeared - and would have cost $5 extra. Although it did have hot showers, there was no hot water faucet at the sink. Somehow, the place made my nightshirt smell for two days afterward, sort of a musty dirt smell. There are plenty of other places to stay at Aguas Calientes, most of which are not listed online or in the guidebooks. But it's probably best to pay a little more - in this case, we paid about the same as at Los Niņos in Cusco but got a lot less. There was another hotel on the same pedestrian road where a group from Wisconsin was staying - looked nice, had good security - Hotel Machu Picchu Inn, I believe was the name. It's the long, yellow building on the left side of the ped steps as you go up the hill. If there were a next time, we'd probably try there, even though rates look to be about $100 a night.

Unless you stay in Inkaterra's Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn or the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge up by the ruins, you will undoubtedly be spending the night somewhere in Aguas Calientes. Since both places are expensive (The Sanctuary Lodge was looking for over $600 a night when we checked!), travelers on a budget will be looking for places like Gringo Bill's or one of the many Hostals. We have no idea how good any of these places are, but Aguas Calientes is full of cheap lodging.

    Gringo Bill's: Hotel lodging
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Gringo Bill's was recommended by Vter Pickledonions in the past. I decided to look them up and since I found them on the hostal/hotel search engine listed on my homepage, I decided to book them. I found them to be clean, have a large bathroom with hot water, and very professional. Though the prices are marked up as with everything else associated with Machu Picchu, they were definetely on the lower end comparitievely in Agua Caliente. I also liked the fact that they have a very informative website where I found a lot of useful information and train timetable so I decided to book with them. I was glad I did but if you decide to find lodging until you are there, you might bargain one of the street callers to a lower price. They are situated directly left of the Cathedral on the main square. Very easy to find. Even though they name themselves as a hostal, we had private rooms and bath and felt like a well managed clean hotel. Breakfast was included and includes fruit, bread and butter, cereal, yogurt, and juice.

They have a game room with a pool table on one level, the breakfast area on another level, and the restaurant/bar on another level.

    Aguas Calientes
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you do a regular Inca Trail you don't sleep in Aguas Calientes, as you take the train back to Cusco in the afternoon of the 4th day and sleep in Cuzco. BUT if you want to see Machu Picchu a little longer, you may tell the agency to get you a ticket for the following day train, so you can sleep in Aguas Calientes and have an extra day to visit MP. BUT you will have to pay the entrance (30 USD) again!

Pueblo Hotel Inkaterra: Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
  • Tip Rating:

  • We are still talking about this fabulous Hotel . If you splurge on one hotel ...let it be this one . Right from when we first stepped off the train and were greeted by several porters we knew we were in for a treat. The setting is South American Jungle ( even though you are walking distance to the little town ) Each room seems on it's own hidden among the vines and trees . The room are spacious with beds covered in fresh natural fibre sheets and covers . There are little gifts from the spa on each bed !!! My husband , tired from the long train ride and suffering from altitude sickness was so soothed by this place... The breakfast ( included ) is huge and delicious . We ate dinner there and it is equally fabulous. We have travelled to many parts of the world staying at hundreds of hotels and it is the only time there was an email waiting for us asking us how our stay was.

    Fabulous ambiance !!

Gringo Bill's: Accomodation in Aguas Calientes
  • Tip Rating:
  • While the name certainly isnt the nicest around, Gringo Bill's does meet the need of what most travelers are looking for in Aguas Calientes: a cheap place not far away from the train station to spend the night before moving on to Machu Picchu the following morning. One note though, the washroom is one of a kind, with see-through windows around the washroom, and in my case, a huge hole between the windows for the whatever creatures outside to speculate what I am doing in the washroom. Not that I care too much, after a long day in the valley... US$10 for a single with bath.
