Paqaymayu Campsite
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is the second campsite. You arrive here after the hardest climbing, after passing the highest peak and you are really tired when you get here. It id also the highest camp so is the coldest. It has nice views, 2 WC (cold showers) and you can see Runkurukay ruins from here.

There are more luxerous options but you reallt can't beat Rupa Wasi Ecolodge. The lodge is up the hill a bit from the square and is the only place with a view of Machu Picchu. Unlike the rows of concrete block hotels, Rupa Wasi is a beautifull wooden lodge with stunning views, big open windows and a great romantic getaway feel.

The Service here is great without being sufficating. They will give you advice on hiking trails, Cook you a cheep traditional Peruvina meal and show you around the town but, other than perhaps the golden retrever, they will not bug you when you just want to stare out the window at Macchu Picchu up on the Mountian.

They have a reall commitment to ecology, they are building an extension out of recycled plasytic botles, and will happily tell you about their philosophy and their projects. They also have a Surf Lodge on the Coast.

    Highly recomended

An example of a good hotel that is not listed in many guides and is overlooked, but probably one of the best choices and deals in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes).

Clean, nice rooms with private baths, breakfast (in hotel restaurant) and right on the tracks, so going from the train to the hotel is easy. (Make sure to get a room with a view over the river and mountains - it's amazing!)

Since you will be doing the trek with a guided group, you won't have to pick a campsite. Each company has their own and ours was comfortable enough.

Set in a lush forest, this was more or less a local person's home and we were allowed to camp on it. It was a bit cramp but maybe safer being so close together. It was the best food of the trip, with freshly caught trout for dinner. Toilets were non-existant and area for going was pretty gross. No one seems to practice burying their feces or toilet paper. :( Since it is part of the group trek, it is included in your price. Ours was $170 per person for a four day, three night trip.

Pacamayo Camp: rooms with a view
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was my favorite campsite as it had the best views of the snowy peaks looming in the distance.

Though it was very wet when we arrived, the sky cleared just in time for an amazing sunset.

Though a bit tattered and having the atmosphere of a high school gym, after camping with no facilities for two nights, this was a virtual oasis.

First off, even though we still slept in the tents, we got to eat inside and sit on real chairs. There were showers and toilets, true luxury. It was a total party atmosphere and after dinner, there was a bit of a disco. And best of all, they had beer! ;=> This usually does and did lead to lots of dancing.

Agua calientes = hot water: It´s time to relax in Agua calientes
  • Tip Rating:
  • To return from Machu Picchu (if you didn´t travel by helicopter :-D or bus ) you have to go to Agua calientes because your train starts here. This village offers great thermal bathes, the best place to relax after Inca trail, machu Picchu visit, Huayna Picchu climbing etc.

The campgrounds on the Inca Trail are all excellent and foreseen from good facilities. They have long drops (it takes a long time before you hear certain things drop when you go to the toilet. -lol-) and flushing toilets.

There are washbasins with cold running water so that you can fresh yourself up, brush your teeth, ...

The campgrounds are all levelled and have all an excellent view on the surrounding mountains and an unspoiled view towards the stars in the sky.
