The Hotel the Inca Kings Wish They Could Stay At
Rarely do we splurge on hotels when we travel. But, at Machu Picchu we did and it was worth it! The Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn in Aguas Calientes is a great experience unto itself and we would recommend a jouney to stay there even if it didn't have the famous ruins just a 20-minute bus ride away.
When I was in college, I worked at a five-star hotel in Florida, so I can say with confidence that the service here was top-notch. All of the customer service employees come from Lima or Cusco, and they speak English well.
All of the other employees speak Spanish and NEVER fail to greet you no matter where you are. The food was locally produced and of high quality -- we definitely recommend getting the breakfast/dinner meal plan. The rooms are well appointed and stylishly decorated. Andrea and Sarah loved the fragrant soaps and creams that were left in our huge bathroom. In all of our travels, this is now our favorite hotel -- bar none!
Oh, if you are choosing between the Machu Picchu Pueblo inn and the Sanctuary Lodge located directly at the ruins, we spoke to a few people who were in the process of spending nights at both. Except for the location, they all rated the Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn (Inkaterra) as the superior hotel.
One word of caution, however. You are still in Peru, so don't be carelesss with your valuables even at a top-notch hotel like this. While we were there, anopther guest had money taken from a wallet he left unattended in his room.
Unique Quality: Despite the high quality of food, service and lodging, our favorite part of the hotel had to be the hummingbirds. They are abundant both in numbers and in variety of species. It is said that up to 14 species of hummingbird can be seen on the lush hotel grounds, but we only saw four. However, that was plenty as the quick little birds are spectacular. We got up early every morning to watch the birds as the feeders were put out.

Humming birds and orchids
I'd read all the tips about this hotel and was really looking forward to our visit. Luckily I wasn't disappointed. The room was fabulous - large, tastefully decorated (loved the colourful throws on the beds!) and beautifully set among the trees and flowers. The scented oils to warm in lamp rings were a really nice touch. Dinner in the restaurant was really good (probably one of the best meals we had in Peru) and breakfast was lovely too.
We only stayed one night and wished it had been at least two as there's more to this place than its convenience for the bus for the ruins (only a few minutes walk). We managed to fit in a nature walk (included in the half board package) - one of the hotel's naturalists took us on an hour long walk through the hotel's own orchid gardens and explained these fascinating plants in great detail. We were even given magnifying glasses with which to study the most minute!
Unique Quality: But the highlight has to be the humming birds! There are so many varieties, all of them stunning. we watched for ages and managed to get some pretty good photos of them at the feeders.
Just one downside perhaps - the railway line runs through the hotel grounds and you have to cross it to get to the cafe. But when you get there you can get some lovely fresh fruit juices, and free internet access.

Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
We are still talking about this fabulous Hotel . If you splurge on one hotel ...let it be this one .
Right from when we first stepped off the train and were greeted by several porters we knew we were in for a treat.
The setting is South American Jungle ( even though you are walking distance to the little town ) Each room seems on it's own hidden among the vines and trees . The room are spacious with beds covered in fresh natural fibre sheets and covers . There are little gifts from the spa on each bed !!!
My husband , tired from the long train ride and suffering from altitude sickness was so soothed by this place...
The breakfast ( included ) is huge and delicious . We ate dinner there and it is equally fabulous.
We have travelled to many parts of the world staying at hundreds of hotels and it is the only time there was an email waiting for us asking us how our stay was.
Unique Quality: Fabulous ambiance !!

Most Likely, You Will Stay In Aguas Calientes
Unless you stay in Inkaterra's Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn or the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge up by the ruins, you will undoubtedly be spending the night somewhere in Aguas Calientes. Since both places are expensive (The Sanctuary Lodge was looking for over $600 a night when we checked!), travelers on a budget will be looking for places like Gringo Bill's or one of the many Hostals. We have no idea how good any of these places are, but Aguas Calientes is full of cheap lodging.

Aquas Calientes Lodging
The accomodations are very clean. Don't expect a telephone or TV in the room but who goes here for that? Location is convenient to A.C. The onsite restaurant has good food but a pricey.
Unique Quality: The place consist of over 50 acres of cloud forrest with stone paths leading to each of the bugalows. Service was very helpful.

Very central
Try Machu Picchu Hostal,if travelling by train,you step off the train onto the platform and virtually walk into reception.
It is situated in the centre of AC. Walk out the entrance to Restaurants for breakfast and all meals,banks,tourist shopping, and the bus stop to catch the transport to Machu Picchu is 50 metres away.It seemed quiet and the staff were helpful.I slept in a single room,2 beds,tv,table and chairs and clean.

No Tv, No Frigobar
This is a very good 5 stars hotel. But you won't find any TV or Frigobar in your room. And if you want to make telephone calls from your room, you have to pay $ 5 as a connection tax.

Various questions on transportation and other topics
Hello,
My fiance and I are going to Peru mid-nov to beg-dec.
Question 1: Do you think the weather will be ok?
We are planning on going to Arequipa, spend 2D/1N and head to Colca Canyon for a 2D/1N tour. We are staying at the Sonesta hotel in Arequipa and Colca lodge in Colca.
Question 2:Do you know these hotels? Are they OK?
Question 3:2 days (or exactly 1 1/2 day) in Arequipa is enough?
After that, we will arrive on time to take the train from Arequipa to Juliaca (the overnight train).
Question 4: I can't see the timetable Arequipa-Juliaca in the Perurail website... Is there a website other than perurail to check prices and time?
In Juliaca, we should arrive on time to go to our 3D/2N tour to Taquile (1N) and Suasi Island, where we will spend the night at the only hotel of the island.
At the end of our tour (we should get back to Puno around noon the third day), we would like to rent a car and go directly to Urubamba to check in the hotel Sol y Luna and spend 3D/2N there.
Question 5: Can we rent a car and is it safe to drive?
Question 6: Can we avoid spending a night in Puno (I've heard it does not worth it).
After Sacred Valley, we want to spend two days in Cusco at the Casa San blas hotel and then, on the third day, go to Machu Picchu for the 2D inca trail. But we want to stay at Machu Picchu pueblo hotel at Agua Calientes but none of the tour suggests this hotel.
Question 7: Do you know an operator which can organize that for us?
Question 8: We are not very "backpackers" and I've heard that during the 4D inca trail, you spend the nights in dorms, is that true? Can we just stay in a
tent?
Alright, I hope those are the only (or should I say all!) the questions I had.
