Hatun Wasi Sacred Valley Hotel: Local Flavor
You have a sense of where you are in this hotel, and how people live. There is no TV or phone, and no heat in the rooms--but there are lots of cozy blankets, and the nice people will bring you a small space heater if you need it. There IS adequate hot water.
There are reed mats on the tile floor, and local art and weavings on the walls. The grounds have lots of flowers and even a hammock.
I liked this place--it had atmosphere.
Unique Quality: The Hatun Wasi is run more like a B & B than a hotel. Breakfast is included in the rates, and other meals are available on request. $30 for room with breakfast; about $60 for room + all 3 meals.
There is at least one family-sized room with 4 beds--double, single, and bunks.
A section of the original Inca trail runs just outside the property.

Las Chullpas: Comfortable, Rustic and Friendly!
I was so happy that we chose Las Chullpas to stay when we were in the Sacred Valley. Chalo and Leonie are extremely friendly and helpful. Not only did they make sure we felt comfortable, but they also helped us track down lost luggage, set up horseback riding trips, tended to my mother when she got sick, and introduced us to a friendly and helpful taxi driver. Chalo runs the guesthouse portion of the operation. Every morning we got a locally grown, healthy, and organic breakfast (consisting of eggs, fresh fruit bowls, and delicious bread). When we were too tired to find a place for dinner, he whipped out a delicious meal. Each room is set up with its private bathroom with a rustic, unique design. Chalo, I believe, built the guesthouses himself. The guesthouses are situated on a beautiful property where they grow their own food and many medicinal herbs. Leonie is a midwife and natural healer who will provide affordable natural health consultations, and provide herbal remedies. She is especially brilliant with women who are traveling alone. She services a lot of folks in the Sacred Valley. During our stay, she was pulled away for a child birth nearby. Staying here was one of the most memorable parts of the trip!
This is also a great place for vegetarians!
Unique Quality: Great guesthouses with private bathrooms and fireplaces. Breakfasts are part of service. Friendly owners. Family friendly (they even have a young daughter living with them). Very open and caring owners.

Cases Arco Iris: Special Project Accomodation
If you arrive in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, consider not to stay in Cusco, but to start with a stay in a town like Urubamba. It is 450 meters lower than Cusco, which is much better for acclimatisation and Urubamba is far less touristic than Cusco. In Urubamba a Dutch women has invested a lot in a special project called Cases Arco Iris. On this complex are 8 fantastic and luxerious nice and heated (!) bungalows which cost 35 USD per night. All this money goes directly into the project. The project is about a school for poor local children and medical support for the Urubamba villagers and farmers. For us it was a very special stay. We have never had such a nice accomodation for 35 USD and the funding and support idea is also special. The location is a few km for Urubamba central plaza, but motortaxi's are less than a dollar and only take some 10 minutes or so.
Unique Quality: The volunteers of this Dutch run project are not only commited to helping the villagers, but are also extremely helpful in making your stay great and they have all the info you can wish about Pisac, Salineras, Cusco ect.
All the food during your stay will be self grown biological food.
