Changing money

by Enewons

I shall be flying into Lima in mid February and would like to know whether I will have problems changing UK pound into the local currency. I notice that US$ and Euro are mentioned always but not GBPounds. What is the exchange like? Also will I able to change them in Bolivia as I shall also be visiting La Paz.

What will the weather be like in February/March? Will there be any rain? We will be visiting the Inca ruins, Machu Picchu, Nazca Lines and La Paz, Lake Titicaca and the Oruro Carnival in Bolivia.I know it is summer but will it be cold in these places.

As this will be my first time in S. America I hope to pick up a sovenir or two.
Are items made of apaca wool cheapwer in Peru or Bolivia?

Thanks, fellow vters.

At the exchange booth in the arrivals hall (the luggage pickup) I am sure you won´t have any problems. Besides, there are ATMs in that area.

Yes, summer in the southern hemisphere but it will be (the end of) the rainy season in the Andes (Cusco, MP etc). And this year exceptionally heavy. Read my warnings about planning flights to/from CUS which I posted as answers to questions recently in the Peru forum.

While you stay in Peru, it is possible you get some problems if you try to change UK pounds. It is not a problem if you try to change US dollars or euros.

At this moment, it is summer in Lima, it lasts from January to March, it is warm. If you like the beaches you can go, they are near to the city. About Cusco and others cities in the highlands, it is cold and it is raining.

I was warned not to exchange currency at the airport because they charge you more there. I knew this after the fact! It's better to just get cash from the ATMs or do the money exchange at the bank.

Yes, it's going to be cold & rainy in the Andean highlands as above posts already mentioned.

It seems like these types of souvenirs could be cheaper in Bolivia than in Peru as the economy of the former is much less developed than that of the latter.

Goodluck & enjoy beautiful Peru!

Thanks nhoolb, dansak and riss73. Will try to change GBpounds in the bank in Lima but will also bring some USD. This will be a totally new experience and I'm really looking forward to trying the local food and visiting the markets.

Hi Enewons!

I guess you won't be able to change GBpounds in the bank in Lima.
Banks in Lima just change US dollars, and in some cases euros.

good luck!

I live in Mexico, so i just bought some dollars to go there, and i was using ATMs there without issues. Right there they change mainly dollars and less Euros. I went on december and the first rains were coming. For Alpaca wool i found almost the same prices in both countries, but it depends of the quality of the Alpaca wool, Baby Alpaca is the soft one, but is more expensive than the regular Alpaca wool, you'll feel the difference.

My initial response re: currency exchange is only relevant to dollars as that's what I carry. You may want to heed the advise here about the exchange of GB sterling pounds as I realized that the Peruvian currency is pegged to the US Dollar. Goodluck again and enjoy your trip!

Travel Tips for Lima

District Miraflores....without foggy sky

by chancay

one hour later the fog has gone. ´The grew sky is typical for Lima, the foggy clouds are typical for a lot of seaside places....and as quick as it comes it goes as well. That day we had a nice sunny sky and as always high temperatures.
Normally in Lima there´s no real winter, it´s never less than 10 degrees (Celsius), just this last winter 2002/2003 I heard about some "real" cold days......that means less than 10 degrees ...:-) but still not less than zero...far away.

Pre-Incan Pyramid in the Midst of Modernity

by cruisingbug

The Huallamarca pyramid sits smack in the middle of the more affluent San Isidro residential area of Lima. Our first glimpse of it was at night, when it's most striking - spotlights illuminate the stonework, which is done in an adobe style. The pyramid is surrounded by a chain-link fence for protection.

There is a small museum on-site - not really worth the 5 soles. Inside are some mummy bundles (mummies still intact) and artifacts found at the site. Excavations are ongoing.

airport and planes

by nhoolb

Lima airport Jorge Chavez has been completely renovated. It opened it's new facilities 2 february 2005, I arrived there on that day, the first day it was in operation.....In the depature lounge all is modern and efficient, roomy, gates with jetways, plenty of shops and a bar. Yes, a complete change from the years before....Now, in January 2009, also the immigration procedures when arriving have very much improved, no more waiting in line for 1 hour (not exaggerating!). All the previous misery is over now. But when you get outside it is still chaotic. Not only all the people waiting for their loved ones. That is latin custom, get used to that. In fact I think it is quite moving. But the taxis. Chaotic. (Bogota airport is much better organised in that aspect). Best is to have your hotel or someone you know to meet you.
I arrived (and departed) at (from) Lima airport from international and domestic flights many times.
Departing Lima internationally can sometimes be trysome. First the security/drugs checks, then the check-in. Long lines because there are only 3 or max. 4 check-in desks open. That happens with every airline, Iberia, KLM, Avianca, you name it. So that's not the airport's fault....
Look at my Peru-transportation page for info on domestic flights.

try the authentic peruvian ceviche

by christian99 about La Punta

this isn't exactly a restaurant but a place with many restaurants throughout, fresh fish,'s a bit expensive but it's really worth it........... Ceviche......the main dish, it contains raw fish cooked with lemon......

Walking arounf Miraflores is fun. The street kids are humerous, creative, and self-reliant, if annoying. The people are very friendly and there is a lot of good restaruants in the area, although they are somewhat overpriced by Peruvian standards.
