A day and a half is about all you will want in Lima. Peru has much to offer outside of Lima. You can paraglide for along the cliffs of Miraflores, walk down to the crafts market (Mercado del Indios)---- you can get better deals outside of Lima, and spend the better part of a day walking around central Lima wandering around the old churches and Museums. You can also get a cheap one hour city tour in the center. There is also parkland along the Miraflores cliffs where you can relax and watch the sunset in the evening. I just got back last Sat. It tended to be overcast till around noon and then the sun came out so take some sunscreen if you have fair skin.

You can eat at the festival de la comida (which is best to go to around 2pm Saturday and Sunday)in Barranco. This is a nice part of Lima to check out. You can walk across the puente de suspiros and have a cocktail at a bar overlooking the Pacific.
Plaza de Armas is worth visiting, some nice old churches from colonial times and you can get some food in Lima's little chinatown.
There are open top bus tours of the city and little buses to take you up Cerro San Cristobal for some great city views.
Go to the museo de arte at the top of Avenida Arequipa, it's a good museum and there are usually artsy events going on in the beautiful gardens at the weekend.
If you're there on Saturday night there are some good bars and salsotecas in Miraflores. El Tayta on Av. Larco is a good bar to start with, then head to Tequila Rocks on Diez Canesco (bar with dance floor). There are some more upmarket discos in Larco Mar - which also has a shopping centre and cinema. If you're into gambling the Marriot hotel opposite Larco Mar has a good casino.

Travel Tips for Lima

The rain in Lima is called Garúa or llovizna

by El_Sueco

Well, it was one of those rainy days ...
(in fact, it is not *rain*, it is garúa or llovizna which means that the relative humidity is 100 por cent, and when the temperature falls the air cannot hold the water, which then falls out in a form similar to rain)
... I mean, to you it will make no differens if it is rain or lluvizna, as long as you get wet.
This garúa is most frequent during the winter period (in June-July-August), when the weather in Lima not is at its best.

Barranco

by TXgal

Barranco is a small town just a few miles south of Lima. If you visit the Bridge of Sighs, it's just up the hill from there. It was fun to walk around outdoors w/out all the traffic and people that crowd Lima.

Combis

by elpariente

Traveling in combi is cheap , amusing and quick
You must ask about the route that you want to do , go to the street and then let you go , because each combi besides the driver takes another person ,that with half body outside the combi, is shouting the route , practical grabbing the future customers

Eating by Lima's Plaza de Armas: Not Great

by AKtravelers

The only restaurant tip we got concerning eating around the Plaza de Armas was that the outdoor cafes were pleasant. This is true enough. However, we weren't really impressed with the food at the cafe we chose. The view was nice, the agua con gas refreshing and the shade was appreciated. But we probably could have done better.

San Francisco Cathedral

by Snipernurse

Easily the highlite of Lima. Await for the departure of a English or Spanish speaking tour by sitting in the courtyard and admire the intricacy of the exterior of the building, and try to snap a good photo of Limans play with the many pigeons that call the outside of the cathedral home. The inside of the Cathedral is fantastic. Regarded as one of the best cathedrals in South America it is a suprise at every room. Unfortunately photography is forbidden. :-( Do not miss this.
