cell phone system

by LasseOBer

Hello,
We are going to Peru this holiday season to visit the family of my wife, and to show them our kid, who was born in december last year. Well, to the question:
Do anyone know if you can use a European (Swedish) cell-phone in peru? I had an idea about bringing my phone and get a refill-card while I'm there. Greatful for replies.

Only if your cel phone is tri/quad band as the frequencies in Peru are different from those in Europe.

I used my phone in Peru. In Ecuador it wasn't possible. But please check if the service is available for you on the website of your telephone operator. They always have information lists for countries where they have the so called roaming agreements.

There are several options for renting cell phones just as you exit customs at the Lima Airport. There are so many vendors you will have to weave around them, They might sell a Peru SIM chip and that would likely be cheaper than roaming with your regular phone service.

Travel Tips for Lima

snacking is a big part of Lima's culture

by richiecdisc

Street foods in Lima were probably the best in all of Peru. There were hawkers selling everything from slices of pineapple and watermelon to freshly cracked coconut meat. There were so many exotic fruits, it's hard to remember them all like cactus, which was cut open for you after you bought it. Baby beef heart kebabs were another tasty item as well as papa rellenas (a mashed potato filled with spicy meat). But picarones were my favorite. This photo is from a great little cart on the street, just outside the Mercado Central. It was crowded so we were just going to get our order and eat it while walking but the owner insisted we sit down and told a few guys to move over and give us seats. It was quite a show how they formed the dough rings and fried them, turning them with a wooden spoon. The anise-seeded delight was covered with a thin honey syrup just before seving them, piping hot. Beyond delicious and about 30 cents for an order of four!

The way of shopping

by El_Sueco about Metro

The traditional way of shopping is going to the local market (Mercado). However, that way of shopping is going to change, as during the last 5-10 years a number of supermarkets have grown up like mushrooms in Lima.
The greatest one is Metro, whose greatest shop, the great 'Hypermercado' is located in Chorrillos.
Metro has a number of supermarkets in Lima. Competition come from other supermercados like Wongs, Ripley, Saga Falabella etc. Shopping in Polvos Azules (a conglomerate of small shops of doubtful character) and Polvos Rosados etc have its charm. You can buy anything to good prices (but with the risk of being cheated or robbed).
The supermarkets have in general good quality, good prices and a huge(!) sortiment. Just look at these outstanding tables for vegetables in Metro! The greatest fruits and vegetables you have ever seen, and fruits you have never heard of. Try them, they are delicious! (tip: Ask how to eat them!)
The supermarkets have a great assortment of all things, food, clothes, house equipment, furniture etc. Take for instance a look at the assortment of rice (different types) or milk (different types)! Generally speaking you presumably will find prices average or less than average,

Flying is the best way to...

by jillsherter

Flying is the best way to travel to and from Lima. Inter-Peruvian flights are inexpensive. Travel by car can be dangerous depending on the time of day you go and which travel routes you drive. Trains are very slow and bounce around a lot.
Taxi--set the price beforehand and get a phone number so you can call the same driver to pick you up later in the day.

Fondas & Cantinas I

by K-nalla about Bodega Carbone

Back in the day a Fonda was a place for men, no women allowed here. They came to talk about football, politics and how they managed to keep their mistresses happy. Most of them opened and operated by italians escaping Europe and the war, they have still today a special flavor. Those italians experts in combining good drinking with good eating gave us these places of workship. Carbone is one of them, founded in 1923 by Mr Carbone himself now operated by the owners nephew offers two different areas: the store to buy whatever suits you better and the private area as its name calls it, for more discrete meetings.
Most famous clients: presidents (Augusto B Leguía, Alan García, Manuel Odría, Bustamante y Rivero), and celebrities such as Plácido Domingo. Choritos a la Chalaca, but the place is famous for its pan con jamón (rumored to be the best in town) dont try to order it after 1300, you wont find any left.

Paragliding

by YolandaC

The one day of sun we had in Lima we were lucky enough to spend paragliding. It really is so exhilarating feeling the wind catch the sail and finding yourself floating over the ocean (or maybe it's just deep relief!). Height is achieved by using the air currents from the ocean that bouce off the skyscapers lining the cliffs of Miraflores. In doing so you get to peep into some beautiful apartments (I know a little creepy) and see some amazing roof top patios. Highly recommended! It's only offered in the afternoon, around 3ish. Head to Larco Mar and settle into a patio with a coffee, once you see the paragliders sail past you they're open. Head towards the park of love and you'll see them set up on the field just beyond. If you watch for a while you'll pick up on the man in charge - just walk up and get your name on the list. At the time it cost 40 dollars for 15 mins. I know a little steep but I thought it was well worth it.
