late flights

by corysharon

we are getting off a cruise ship at 10 am and our flight does not leave back to canada untill midnight. is there something we could do in town until closer to our flight time. we have luggage too? why do all the flights to the north mexico .usa . and canada leave so late.?

Re: late flights

by GrumpyDiver

We had a similar issue some 4 or 5 years ago. We had a morning flight in from Cusco and a late night flight to Toronto.

We checked our bags at the airport (if I remember correctly, they had a luggage storage area), as it was too early to check into our flight. We grabbed a cab from the airport and headed downtown and wandered around. Visited the Inquisition Museum, had lunch, etc. and headed back to the airport in the evening.

We don't speak Spanish, but managed to make out okay (execept for the the fact that both my daughters got food poisoning and were sick on the flight to Canada).

Why do all airlines fly north so late, that's an easy question to answer. Because....

Re: late flights

Good answer YVR. 100% accurate. Not terribly useful, but accurate...

That being said, I believe the answer is network connections and local takeoff and landing time restrictions. A lot of countries (especially in the developed world) have restrictions on times when aircraft can takeoff and land.

Overlay that with flying times and connections at the destination, and I think you will get your answer.

Re: late flights

I suspect (without having inside knowledge) that part of the problem is that airports in the US and Canada don't like to receive flights (especially international flights) between midnight and 6 a.m.

In order to avoid arriving in the US or Canada on a direct flight at those hours, a good part of the afternoon is offlimits for departures from South America. When you combine this with the fact that you will probably have to make a connection which further pushes the possible departure earlier in the day, and the fact that you don't arrive at the port until 10 a.m., I'm really not that surprised that the next available flight solution for you is not until late night.

After all, there are flights from Lima to places like Miami in the morning, but it's well before you arrive in town...

Re: late flights

by yvr

Your exactly right Grumpy, it is so flights from South America can make morning connections to the east/west or northward, conversely flights to South America generally leave Canada and the USA late in the evening so flights again from the east/west and from the north can connect to their south bound South American flights. Flights arrive in the USA and Canada from about 6am onward. Makes connections easy with mostly no long layovers.

Re: late flights

our best bet seems to be direct to t.O . then connect to yvr. I'm still suprised that there is not more flight's to lax or mexico city that would put me on the west coast.for better con. ps those taco stands smell greatbut danger danger.

The city is filled with beautiful parks and plazas with many monuments....LOTS of monuments. Walking around the Miraflores Malecon and Larcomar Center and watching the sunset from the Hard Rock Cafe.

See a futbol game at the National Stadium

by Snipernurse

Inquire if there is a futbol game at the National Stadium while you are in Peru. It's a cheap and fun way to spend an evening. I felt safe the entire time. It was fun to be amongst the locals and the game was entertaining! Drum corps beat and fans of certain sections of the stadium stand and sing throughout the whole game. Really a fun experience. Strong police/security presence. Check it out

Lima is a very joyful city. It has a lot to offer to the visitor. Peruvian people enjoy every opportunity to spend very nice moments whether it is in a cultural or social way .

The most joyful and visited districts on weekends are Barranco and Miraflores.

Barranco is well known as the bohemian district of Lima. During the Republic it was the favorite place where rich people have their houses to spend the weekend. Nowadays, Barranco has become the center of artists who have their ateliers there and go to the cafes located nearby. At night, Barranco becomes a very joyful and interesting place. Walking around Barranco, you will find countless RESTAURANTS, CAFES, PEÑAS or DISCOS located along the district. Many of these places offer live shows of well-known Peruvian and international artists.

Miraflores is the commercial center of Lima. Many businesses and souvenirs stores are located there, especially on Av. La Paz and Av. Larco. Located near the sea. From there, you can appreciate a beautiful view of the coast especially at night. A good number of restaurants, ART GALLERIES, CINEMAS and a recently opened entertainment center: Larco Mar are among the alternatives that Miraflores offfers to have fun. In discos no sport shoes, no T-shirt

Good eats, on the cheap

by irvbur about Cafe le Paz

This restaurant is right on the Plaza de Armes in Lima. As the name suggests, there are symbols of Peace throughout the restaurant, this is even a plaque listing every Nobel Peace Prize winner. The ambience is more local than fancy, and the service is not especially fast, but if you just want a leisurely dinner and people watching it's well worth the wait. The food is good, the portions slightly larger than average, and the menu is varied enough to suit any pallet. The problem is that I waited so long to post this tip that I forgot what we ordered. However, the overall experience was so delightful that I wanted to share it with my VT friends.

Que rico pulpo

by K-nalla about costAzul seaFood
