    When I arrived to Puno by bus I was thinking of staying in Hostal Europa. But at the bus station a woman came to me offering me a stay at this Hostal Las Islas. OK, I though, I will try, is not far from Hostal Europa, so if I didn't like it, I'd always have the chance of visiting this other one.
    But the place happened to be OK, clean, centrical (just by the market) and cheap (20s, 7 USD), so I stayed there. It was at walking distance to the main attractions, and had WC and shower ensuite. Reccomended if you are on a budget.

    If you read the memory above, this is how it dod in fact turn out:
    We had planned on walking into town as it wasn’t too far but at this hour, it was too cold and perhaps too dangerous. We wondered whether to take a cab into town at this ridiculous hour or just stay put in the cold terminal till it was light out and something was surely open. As chance would have it, there was a convenient tout waiting for the bus to arrive and soon asked us if we had a place to stay. We said we had our preference but no reservation and he whisked us off on a crazy cab right around the city in hopes of finding something open. I had explained we didn’t want to pay for this short night and he had agreed that was fair as long as we were staying the next night. He tried our place to no avail and a few others before finding someone that would answer their bell. The room was a dingy affair but at this hour, we took it even though it was explained we would have to pay half of the normal tariff for the short night. It was only six dollars and seemed a better option than walking the cold streets of the city until daylight. We huddled under a mountainous pile of blankets in the cold room and waited for dawn’s early light to make this crazy city seem friendlier.

    Actually, the next night they moved us to a room with a private shower. It was 1000% nicer so it is well worth getting a room with private facilities if you stay here. He gave us a break as we had paid for the three hours the night before. Luckily, he forgot to charge us for the first night when left too. ;) Anyway, the rooms in this newer section of the hotel were pretty nice.

    This was really a spic and span operation with a nice lobby and spotless modern (if a little cramped!) rooms.

    It is very centrally located with a friendly helpful staff. It was a true haven after some lackluster rooms in Cuzco. All that for $10 a double with private bath (and plenty of hot water). Luxury for the backpackers at last...

    Great Hotel ...fabulous rooms .

    Buffet breakfast is a huge spread. There is a nice dinner menu too. First class service.
    It is a little way from the town but cabs are pretty cheap and it is probably the best resort hotel in town.
    The train stops right in front of the hotel before it gets to the main town area....you can get out and save yourself a trip, but you have to tell the luggage check when you begin your trip so they can access your luggage at the hotel stop, otherwise, you will go to Puno where you will negotiate a taxi which will take you back to where you have already been. Can be annoying after a 10 hour train ride at 14,000 ft elevation. But all in good fun and worth it.

    Music in the lobby every night, by the fireplace. The view of the Lake is outstanding.In the night you can see the camp fires from the reed islands!!

    Taypikala is a great place to stay on your Titikaca trip. It is right along the lake on the road from Puno to Bolivia, in a small town called, Chucuito. They have a bit of a new age feel, the rooms are made to look like they are cut out of the rock and there are giant condors, pumas and stuff on the roof, but the service is excelent, the rooms are comfortable and I highly recomend the hotel. The food is good, the staff friendly, and they have live traditional music if there is a big enough group there. Rooms start at $51, the most extensive night of our trip but not bad if this is your splurge.

    They were extremely helpfull in setting up our trip to Copacabana, though they did try to talk us out of it because of a strike in Bolivia. THey set up a last minute trip to see the Uros and the hot tub and massage for my wife were extremely refreshing at the eng of a tough 2 week trip. Also in that it is outsideof Puno it is a peacefull place, with views of the lake. The town befind it is pretty and has an old fertility temple, just accros the streets from the hotel. Very cool if you are not turned off by a lot of falic symbols.

  • We stayed in this Hotel two times, each for one night. The hotel has a really great service, good rooms and is very secure, near to the city of Puno.

    All rooms has a direct view over the amazing Titicaca Lake, the restaurant in this hotel serves you a great dinner with excellent service, breakfast buffet is also great.

    On Puno the best location is the Isla Esteves Hotel. Ask for a bedroom looking to the sun rise view.

  • We were dragged to this no-star hotel the minute we stepped out of the bus. Or actually, there were loads of people trying to convince us that their hotel was the best (see also my Tourist Trap tip), and the guy from Hostal Bahia won the battle...
    If you're not the type to expect a spotlessly clean room/bathroom, you'll eat anything they call breakfast as long as it resembles food and you just want a pillow under and a roof over your head - this is (one of) the place(s) to stay!

    # It's cheap.

    # Instead of a doorknob, the bathroom door has a convenient hole, so that the person sitting on the toilet can communicate with the people in the room.

    # This hotel provides an amazing 2-4 hours of warm water in the morning (it says "24hrs" on the flyer, but they must have forgotten the dash). Reason all the more for a who-reaches-the-shower-first race every morning! How nice a way of waking up ;-)

    # At breakfast it may take a while to get served, so there's some more time for you to continue waking up. Table cloths and cutlery can be a bit sticky --> an hidden invitation for you to stick around a bit longer?!?

    # Some rooms have a nice little window giving out to the room next door. If the neighbours' door is jammed from the outside, the hotel staff may come knocking on your door to ask if they can use that window to enter the other room...
