festival of the Virgin of Candelaria

by clairemichel

Hi there!

I really want to get to Puno for the festival of the Virgin of Candelaria on February 2nd but can anyone tell me what time the main procession takes place and if I were to miss it is there plenty of other events of this festival to see (and which days are best?)

Many thanks x

Not by one bit will you miss it, the celebrations go from the 2 till the 15, i dont know the exact time of the main parade but it goes for most of the night and the days to follow are not less spectacular, Once you get to Lima you can pick up the actual schedule at the airport's promperu (the tourist booth), the website only has the last years schedule

I'll be in Peru until the 3rd. Will I be able to see celebrations in Lima?

No, sorry, only in Puno. There are some celebrations (yunzas) in some of the poles organized by Punenos who live in Lima now but is not a proper festival.

Travel Tips for Puno

early bird worm worries

by richiecdisc

We tried to get a few more hours sleep before arriving but a boisterous group of men had got on at the last stop, and we couldn’t understand why anyone would want to talk at two in the morning with three hours of a trip left before them. They laughed and talked as we huddled under our jackets to keep warm and at least rest our eyes. The bus pulled into another stop at 3 AM and they luckily got off, but we were intrigued why the bus didn’t pull out in another mad rush right away. The driver came back and yelled in some insane incarnation of Spanish that this was the last stop, Puno! So, the 5 AM arrival that we had chosen over an 11 PM one had become an insane 3AM. Whether we would huddle in the cold empty terminal until daylight or venture out into the dark empty streets in hope of finding a room was the only matter of conjecture. As we now knew the horror stories about the night run from Cuzco to Puno were steeped in at least some truth. .

Schools

by SirRichard

When I saw this beautiful building I thought it might be a museum or official building, but it happened to be a school, as I saw the boys going out after classes. They were all wearing some kinf od uniform that reminded me a military place, but maybe it was just the ordinary uniform for shool boys...

a day to Lake Titicaca

by schlumpf

A must see activity in Puno is definitely rent a boat and chill on the lake... we hire a guy and for the whole day we went on the lake...This lake is sooo beautifull, but you gotta remember that you are 4.000 mt high, so the sun really burns you!
You can do a lot of excursions on the lake, like to Isla de los Uros, but i personally reckon it more like toursit trap then a must c activity. Despite is wellknown that the people are waiting for tourist to sell'em something, i shoudl anyway tell you that is pretty impressing how those people leaves...now is up to you..
To organize an excurion on the lake you can choose beetween:
- go to the harbour and organize it by your own (cheeper)
- go to an agency in Puno and make them sell you something...

I would definitely suggest you the first choice!!

a trip to Isla Taquile

by schlumpf

A very interesting excurion ex Puno is a day off to Isla Taquile. The island is very quiet and you have amazinf views of the lake.
There are also fiew sites to visit, like cerro del sol, y cerro de la luna, but take care, cause it seems a very hsort way, but is not really like this...
To reach the top of the island, you have two possibiliteis:
- trek the normal route, which is somehting like 20mins
- take all of the 300and something stairs....which could be more...

Puno Cathedral

by ValbyDK

The Catedral Basílica San Carlos Borromeo or Puno Cathedral is a baroque cathedral located at ‘Plaza de Armas’ in the centre of Puno.

The Cathedral was built in 1757 and has a beautiful façade with many details. We also entered the cathedral and the big altar was the highlight. Unfortunately, a fire in 1930 destroyed much of the historical artwork in the cathedral and I wasn’t very impressed -compared to the cathedrals in Lima or Cusco.
