I have seen or stayed in a few Suriname hotels, but Surinat in Domburg ( just 18 km south of Paramaribo) is by far the most luxurious one. We have stayed here many weeks, and this year we have booked one of its 5 spacious bungalows for three months. Other Surinat guests we meet here, confirm our opinion. In Surinat rooms, service, beautiful garden are just perfect and the location is incomparable: on a former plantation, surrounded by rainforest, miles and miles of hiking trails, excellent warung Mit-Shiv nearby in Domburg, quiet and an eldorado for birders. One guest, a fanatic birder once counted more than a hundred sorts of birds in the garden of Surinat. A taxi boat can take you from the cosy harbour at Domburg's well known market place to the opposite shore of the Surinam River to another former Dutch plantation, Laarwijk. Surinat's gardener Moon can give you a very interesting tour there. And all of this so close to Paramaribo.
spacious rooms, perfectly appointed, wellness center, beautiful tropical garden, pure perfection, wonderful location surrounded by rainforest and hiking trails
Kosindo is a river lodge on the shore of the Gran Rio in Surinam, in the village Kajana. This special location WITHIN a village of the Amazon rainforest makes Kosindo a unique river lodge.
We did not stay on an island in the river, separated from a village on the shore (like on the island of Danpaati or Pingpe), but Kosindo River Lodge is part of the indigenous village community.
Alone or with owner Jangjanman or guide Jerry, we could walk in the village of Kajana, but also hike through the forest to neighbour villages.
Our comfortable and CLEAN cabin (with private toilet and shower) stood directly on the rivershore. The other lodge buildings - dining area, bakery, kitchen, common areas, and the wood carving workshop - are the transition to the village. We watched the local children and women walking through the lodge to the river. Children playing in the river, local women doing the laundry, guests swimming.
Always coffee, tea and purified drinking water available. Two warm meals and breakfast. Our three nights were far too short for all the activities that were offered, like boat trips, rainforest walks, visiting the villages, wood carving.
We stayed in other Surinam rainforest lodgesbut this one was the most unique cultural experience among the friendly people of the Amazon rainforest.
All Kosindo lodge cabins are overlooking the river, just a few meters from our verandah. Booking directly with the owner Jangjanman we got a reduced rate. One telephone call sufficed. Yes, in the far south of the Surinam Amazon jungle we had cell phone connection, due to the antenna at Kajana airfield, on the shore opossite Kajana and its lodge. When we called, the owner even booked our (€240) regional flight with a bush pilot! This beautiful flight over the Suriname Amazon rainforest, me sitting next to the pilot, was a unique experience. An indigenous employee of Kosindo met us at the pane and took us to the other shore, in a canoe.
Unique location within a Saramaccan village in Upper Surinam. Contacts with the very friendly inhabitants of Kajana and many other activities are possible without a group. Endless hiking trails, boat trips, swimminr in the river in front of your own (clean an comfortable) cabin, private bathroom and toilet in your verandah cabin, wood carving workshop, birding. Transport easily booked by owner himself. Not on an island, like many other lodges in Upper Suriname.
During our trip in Suriname we stayed in Paramaribo four times. Every time in this same hotel. We had different rooms each room had a different pro or con. One was to close to the street, noise very early in the morning. Another one had only a small window somewhere high up.
But in every room we had a warm shower, this not everywhere in Suriname (some only have cold water.) And there was air-conditioning and television in every room too.
The hotel is situated in a shopping street, not far from the main market. But a medium distance to the bars and restaurants at the Waterfront.
Downstairs there is a casino, maybe you can win some travel money. And there is rumour all night long. But the good site of this is that there is a guard at the door all day.
Room prices vary from 32 to 68 Euro per room.
We thought we would not bother friends and relatives and were willing to pay good money for a base to stay during our two months in Suriname. So we found this website Cyntia Rent-a-House, and booked a two-star house for EUR 150 a week.
The house looks nice enough from the outside, but for that kind of money we would have expected much better furniture and household stuff.
True, some things were replaced or repaired at our request, but the general picture was still: poor.
Next time we will book a hotel for a few days and use these to go shopping around for a house. We already have seen better for that price.
To mention a few:
Dirty pillows, unsuitable bedcloths, no cupboard space so that we had to lay our cloths on the second bed.
Bathroom without a place to put your toiletries.
High toilet (as used for the elderly) with loose ring.
Absolute minimum of forks, plates etc., broken oven.
TV with unserviceable indoor antenna.
Fan in second bedroom much too noisy to sleep by (lucky we did not need to use that room).
Musty and smelly washing room.
very beautiful cottages, direct at river..in middle of rain forest..but easy to visit a local village
A Small 2 stars hotel very well placed in one of the most important avenues of the capital Paramaribo.
With no many rooms available the athmosphere is familiar and the rooms are standard by its category.
Meals are made in the Hotel Restaurant though not much variety is offered by the staff.
The main important issue about this hotel is its ubication. Close to the main shopping area in town, you are at five minutes walk from there.
There is no swimming pool in. But it host downstairs a nice and internatinal standard Casino with a wide range of slots machines and all kind of table games as Black Jack, Roulette, Poker, Baccarat, etc....
A mini Las Vegas in Paramaribo.
Krasnopolsky one of the best in town, you can experience a cool and friendly atmosphere so comfortable with a casino that is irresistible, whilst chilling out on a Parbo Bier (1 litre) say wow!
There's a wide range of liquir to choose from imported from Holland.
Krasnopolsky takes up a block, you find many apartment stores so conveniently located under this one roof. I can remember buying some delicious candies and goodies imported from Holland in one of its department store.
Where the Marowijneriver flows into the Atlantic Ocean you will find Galibi. Here are also two Caribbean villages of indians: Christiaankondre and Langamankondre.
In Christiaankondre it's possible to stay in a simple tourist residence. Here are some sleeping rooms and there is also a dormitory. If you prefer sleeping outside, that's possible too: there are some hammocks.
When you stay here you can visit the indian villages, relax in a hammock or walk a little around on the beach and watch how the local people are leaving in their boats or are having fun on the beach.
From mid-february till august giant turtles arrive on Galibi to lay their eggs.
When in Paramaribo the best place to stay is Torarica. It might not be a world class hotel but is the best place to stay.
They have very good sport facilities in the premises: Gym, tenis courts, pool, jacuzzis, sauna, massage parlor.
My favorite accomodation is at my aunt's. There are some good (business) hotels in the city, but they all serve continental breakfast >8((
If you want to see the real life, you should stay with the locals.
A group of hotels seems to be part of a chain of nice hotels found in major centres. They are know as Residence Inns and are moderately priced.
The pink bridge which seems to lead right into the hotel picture is actually located in Guyana, I borrowed it for purposes of effect and will mention here that it is know as the Honeymoon Bridge
