Any wineries in the area?

by cnilson

Are there any wineries in the Punta del Este area that offer tours and/or wine tasting? We'd love to taste some local wines!

There are not wineries in Uruguay. The place is Mendoza in Argentina.

Of course there are wineries in Uruguay ! But they're not in Punta del Este.
If you want to taste some wines, many Punta del Este restaurants have very good cavas.
A totally different experience is to visit a vineyard / winery. The oldest in Uruguay dates from 1854, and is Los Cerros de San Juan. It's located in Colonia, about 350 km West from Punta del Este. Their website is http://www.loscerrosdesanjuan.com.uy
I've been there and it's beautiful. You can arrange for having lunch and visiting the winery and vineyard. Try to go to nearby Carmelo, the Estancia Anchorena (http://www.presidencia.gub.uy/anchorena/default.htm) and Colonia del Sacramento and spend the night there. The driver can't taste all the wines ;) , so you'd better not drive much after the visit.
You can schedule a visit calling about a week in advance to +598 2 481 7200, or sending an email to info@loscerrosdesanjuan.com.uy

Other good wineries are Bodegas Juanicó (http://www.juanico.com.uy/toc.htm) and bodegas Juan Carrau (http://www.castelpujol.com/ingles/)
The most characteristic wine of Uruguay is the Tannat. It's somewhat stronger than Cabernet, and they compete favorably with the Tannats from Madiran(France).
I suggest you try a good one in a restaurant, preferably one aged in oak (Roble in Spanish - it says so in the bottle). It's a good companion to our meat.
Of course we also have Cabernet Sauvignon (good, but not as good as Chileans), Merlot, Syrah (or Shiraz), Tempranillo and Nebbiolo as varietals.
There are also excellent blends like Preludio (from Juanicó), 1752 (Carrau) and 150 (Los Cerros de San Juan, a special edition for the 150 years of the winery).
In white wines we have Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer. We also have many sparkling wines.

Bonin,
you probably are from Mendoza, Argentina.
So I suggest you use the Argentina Forum in case you want to convince people to go there.
There are plenty of wineries in Uruguay, some are 100 years old. However as far as I know there aren't any around Punta del Este, probably climate too rough.
Half an hour research with Google "Uruguay wineries" should bring sufficient results

Travel Tips for Punta del Este

Casapueblo

by Shakermaker

Casapueblo is the residence of a famous artist from Uruguay called Carlos Paez Vilaro. During the summer Paez Vilaro opens part of his house to the public. This residence has a not common architecture and it's worth a visit. You will also see some panoramic views.
You can find Casapueblo at Ounta Ballena, right before entering Punta Del Este.

Sometimes you come at the wrong time!!!!
