My wife and I are planning to travel to Punta from Buenos Aires on 4/1 and returning on 4/8. According to my 2005 Lonely Planet guide, BA-Punta tickets should be "$US 30-60 depending on route and class of boat".
However, on the buquebus website the cheapest tickets I see are $126 per person each way...which means a minimum of $500 total. This is going to take a larger-than-expected bite out of our vacation budget...
Can anyone recommend a better option for the budget traveler? I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

I did this a few months ago...and, took the "expensive" fast ferry to MVD...which was about U$S50 at most....but maybe less.
I think you can get to PdE even cheaper by taking the ferry to Colonia, and then taking the bus to PdE.

I think the cheapest option you have is to take the Eladia Isabel ferry ( the slow one) in tourist class, the cost is ( go and return) A$ 106 ( about U$ 850 +/- USD 35 ).. Bs As – Mdeo... You travel at nigth and you arrive in colonia early in the morning..After that you take the bus up to Mdeo.. One in 3 Cruces ( bus terminal in mdeo) you take a bus ticket FOR ABOUT U$ 120 (+/- 5 usd) to punta del este in COPSA..

It was in the high 70's when we were there in March. I noticed most of the men wear jeans.
Women were wearing capri's or slacks. It cools off quickly after the sunsets. Take your sunscreen and be sure to use it.
Don't forget the repellent, like I did. You will need it, especially after sunset.
If you do not speak spanish you will also need a spanish dictionary.
I was in Punta del Este in October, a couple of months before the start of the season, when Punta turns into the best party town south of the equator, with beautiful models en masse and endless parties. Miami, Marbella, Ibiza, you get the picture.
As it was out of season, there was no traffic, and we had Punta all to ourselves. The places that we liked the most were actually outside of Punta (which at times can seem like an endless row of concrete highrises) such as the more relaxing Jose Igancio and Barra.
