Gay/Gay-friendly Establishments

by singltravlr

I am taking a break from 2 weeks in BA the first of November and want to spend a couple of days in Montevideo. Am having trouble finding info. about bars, resturants, cafes, etc. that are gay or gay-friendly....although if they don't open until 2AM I probably won't cross their door! Also is the easiest way to travel there by Buquebus's ferry? Thanks for any suggestions.

Taking the direct ferry called (Buquebus) is a great way to travel to Montevideo, Uruguay. A 7 day or less round trip ticket can be purchased at a discount, and the Buquebus has no luggage restrictions or extra charge for bags. The Gay owned Restaurant/Bar called CRU is open from 8:30pm and the staff is very helpful. If you want to stay up late they also have shows and dancing starting after midnight. It's located in a safe neighborhood called Pocitos, at Guayaqui 2985 which is not the norm for Gay places in Montevideo. CRU is also reviewed as one of the best restaurants in Montevideo and the Rack of Lamb there is to die for. Hope this answers your questions?

Travel Tips for Montevideo

Mercado del Puerto

by Bjorgvin

Visit the Mercado del Puerto (Port Market), which is located just outside the port gates. The building was originally built by the British as a railway station but never used as such. The 'Parrillas', traditional stalls that prepare all kinds of meat by a charcoal or wood fire, are popular places to eat. The service is quick, the atmosphere is unique, and the choice is plentiful.

Parrillada

by andal13

Parrillada is a typical food, but actually is much more than that: it is the perfect excuse to meet relatives and friends. A good parrillada has meat, sausages, kidneys, guts, gizzard... roasted on hot coal.
There are many parrillada restaurants all over Montevideo, but a good Montevidean (actually, a good Uruguayan) has a parrillero (the grill to make parrillada) at home!!!

Concerts

by andal13

During spring or summertime, you can enjoy open air concerts (for free) at different parks and squares; Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo (Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo) and Banda Sinfónica Municipal (Municipal Symphonic Band) give these concerts. The programmes are varied, and they include classic and popular music.
The picture shows a concert of Banda Sinfónica Municipal and the singers Washington Carrasco and Cristina Fernández at El Prado, this last summer.

Find the peaceful beaches east of the city...

by akken

In the departamento de Canelones, Ciudad de la Costa runs clear out to El Pinar, with a commercial strip half a km inland (Aveneida Italia/Avenida Ginnatasio), but a peaceful beach along La Rambla. There is nothing here but sand, mild surf (this is saline eatuary, not open ocean), summer sun and winter fresh air.

The conference organizers...

by nomadic

The conference organizers threw a party at this historical masion which has well kept, beautiful grounds. I think it's called 'Secretaria Administrativa del MERCOSUR (SAM)'. Here is a picture of it at night.
