Che Lagarto Hostel

Che Lagarto Hostel is in a great location on one corner of Plaza Independiente, the main square, and offers very good value accommodation. All the usual hostel amenities are here including a kitchen, free internet with a fast connection and a bar. There is a good variety of rooms available, from doubles with private bathroom to twin rooms to dormitories. We booked a twin room with shared bathroom for 3 nights and it cost us 25 dollars per night. The staff are friendly and helpful.

The only quibble I have with this hostel is the way they charge you. Prices are quoted in US dollars and our room cost 25 USD per night. If you pay in Uruguayan pesos they assume an exchange rate of 25 pesos to the US dollar. The real rate at the time was 23 so you lose a fair amount on every dollar. Hence, we took dollars out of the ATM, and paid that way. However, they could only give us the change in pesos, but for that they used the real rate of 23! A slightly dodgy practice I think, designed to make a few extra pesos from unsuspecting tourists, but otherwise the hostel was excellent and I would recommend it. Just make sure you pay in dollars!

Hotels

I've never actually gone to a hotel in Montevideo since i always stay at my relatives houses when I'm there. But i do know that the Sheraton Hotel and the Radisson hotel are some of the best ones to stay in. The Melia Hotel is also a smart option.
The Sheraton is located in Punta Carretas, a nice neighbourhood and it is also connected to the Punta Carretas Shopping Center. It's four blocks away from the beach.
The Radisson is located in the heart of the city (Plaza Independencia).
The Melia is also in Punta Carretas next to the golf.
A Marriot hotel will be opening soon in Carrasco.

Stayed at the Radisson...

Stayed at the Radisson Victoria Plaza Hotel. It's probably the best hotel in town. It's got good service and the English speaking level is very high. However there is a lot of smoke (from cigarettes) in the lobby and on the first few floors. Unless you get non-smoking rooms, you could be in for a lot of discomfort. When I checked in they had no non-smoking rooms left... so (psst here is a secret) I told them I had very strong allergy to cigarette smoking and I could die from it and I had to get a non-smoking room. After much wrangling (I showed them my Radisson Gold Rewards card and told them I was a frequent customer of their chain - Six Continent Hotels chain) they put me in a non-smoking suite! The picture is the smoking room they put me into (before I realized it was a smoking room and started complaining about allergies...)
Have no idea. Work paid for it. I think it was $100night but that was a very special deal only for the conference attendees.

A small casino downstairs. Slot machines. Black Jack. Vice. People smoked incessantly.

rental apartments Montevideo

I recommend you see these websites:

www.MercadoLibre.com.uy

www.apartamentos.com.uy

(if not drive the Spanish language, I recommend you use the translator google)

if you're looking for something that I recommend searching economic zone in downtown Montevideo or Tres Cruces. They are inner and close to transport to take anywhere.

Since you and I welcome my country!

there are many choices of places to stay in montev

there are many choices of places to stay in montevideo
from hostels to luxury hotels ,
there are some 60 hotels in montevideo, tens of guesthouses/hostels
price range from $15 a day per person for a room with tv cable, private bath, telephone to more than $200 with most hotels costing between $40 $80
i would recommend staying in a residential neighborhood hotel rather than in the downtown area
the downtown area is very crowded and somehow filthy and is not very secure
the residential neighborhood (pocitos, buceo, punta carretas, punta gorda) are secure , clean and nice to stroll through its streets , they are full of shopping center, supermarkets, clothing outlet, ice cream shop, restaurant, nightclub,
