Montevideo's Best

The radisson is located in the main Plaza in Montevideo it is a large hotel and also houses the best casino in Montevideo.

The reception area has a grandure about it similar to what you would find in Spain's newer but grander hotels, the reception is well staffed and your luggage leaves you the moment you leave your taxi.

As you progress up the small stairway in the reception you shall notice the shops and display cabinets which only tourists could afford to purchase from, up the stairway you are surrounded by a glass atrium which has obviouslty been added when the hotel was refurbished, this has seating and tables where you can take coffee, tea and light snacks etc or just sit and enjoy a beer and listen to the background music usually Mr Sinatra type music, but not overpowering by any means.

As you reach the lifts you will notice also an entrance to the Victoria casino upper level, the rooms vary dependant on what you choose to pay for, but in general are of a good standard and clean, smoking rooms are available as are business class rooms if you request and upgrade, I stayed inone of the smaller suites which was more than ample for one and would be just as adequate for couples and even with small children . The bath and shower are sufficient and clean and a good supply of towels are in the room along with the usual shower gel, hairdryer and so on.

Ther are mini bars in all the rooms stocking the usual Johnnie Walkers, Rum Vodka etc and a few local beers with fruit juice and soft drinks. Ice buckets are provided and ice can be obtained through room service.

One immediate thing you will notice is the missing tea and coffee making facilities which are usually standard in hotels across the world, but it is possible to have these brought to the room although I did not request this service, it maybe woth checking this out.

On the 25th Floor is the hotel's main restaurant and this is also where guests have breakfast which is a buffet of the usual suspects. (room service is available 24 hours a day)

The dinner menu is quite varied but does not change every day, so be prepared to see the same dishes, but they are cooked well and are substantial portions, and although it is a little longer wait than perhaps global travellers are used to, the service is decent and the staff are friendly and polite.

Overall the hotel is of a good standard and for those of us who travel the world staying in hotels, it is not the number one, it is more than pleasant and has all the services etc we expect of our homes away from home.

I should point out that I stayed in the hotel for an extended period and much longer than most visitors would be staying

Unique Quality: On the 6th Floor is the swimming pool. spa and hairdressers for both men and women, the pool is large and more than adequate for a morning or evening swim and swimming aids are provided for children and adults who are not strong swimmers, but the pool is fairly shallow with the deepest being just over the 6 foot depth, there is no diving etc so it is quite a tranquil area and an outside area is adjacent for the sun worshippers.

In the heart of Montevideo

After a long flight delay from Buenos Aires, we would have been happy to lay down in even a roach motel but the Radisson definitely was not a roach motel. It is perhaps the nicest accomadation in Montevideo. The hotel has a swimming pool(I think it is on the eighth floor), a spa, and hair salon. A casino is located in the basement of the hotel. The Radisson is located in the Ciudad Vieja section of the city in the Plaza Independecia. Breakfast is included.

Views and Fine Dining

by MikeAtSea about Arcadia

Serving an international menu, this sophisticated dining room offers a romantic setting and world class cuisine. The interior space provides secluded tables and large windows that proffer great views from the 25th floor of the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel. Crystal chandeliers, fresh flowers and lovely tableware pamper guests and set the stage for outstanding dishes such as rack of lamb and duck confute.

The Arcadia which is the on the 25th floor of the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel offers excellent food and service, but the view is pretty special too. Not an outstanding seafood restaurant but good is El Viejo y El Mar - out along the boardwalk to the east - it sits out on the water, looking over the ocean so a very nice location to dine. Another outstanding choice would be Cru Cocina, more nicely varied menu with more typical local fare with some nice twists. So overall if you want upscale and classy go to Arcadia, if you want water front go to El Viejo y El Mar and if you want a more authentic and comfortable dining experience then Cru.

Good wine, excellent meat, great view and beautiful place: La Casa Violeta, in front of Buceo Yacht Port.

Any restaurant in the Puerto Mercado - about 10 mins from Bus Station with traffic and lights etc and then 5 min taxi back from Puerto Mercado to Holiday Inn.

Pure Uruguayan Beef and great Tannat wine !!

Get a picture of your Mum beside the big clock in the middle of the area and have her seranaded by the "wandering from table to table" musicians.

Tips from other VT's are very good, but if you really want something upclass try LA CORTE. a few blocks from holiday Inn in front of Constitutiion Square. Ex-president Bush dined there during his visit after advice from US ambassador.
Anyway, the choice of El Viejo y el Mar will be great too.

The Gay owned Restaurant/Bar called CRU is open from 8:30pm and the staff is very helpful. If you want to stay up late they also have shows and dancing starting after midnight. It's located in a safe neighborhood called Pocitos, at Guayaqui 2985 which is not the norm for Gay places in Montevideo. CRU is also reviewed as one of the best restaurants in Montevideo and the Rack of Lamb there is to die for.
