Driver/Guide needed for one day tour

by bpwarne

We are looking for a driver/guide for a 1/2 day tour of Montevideo and the surrounding area. We will be either two people or a group of 6-8. If you can recommend one, please help.
Thanks in advance,
Bob & Patty

You can walk in the port surrounding area to see the town and have lunch in the market nearby; it's what we've done when we're in the cruise and it was nice

Did you ever find a guide? What were the results? We're going to be in Montevideo for ~~12 hours on a cruise in Feb. Any suggestions on where we should we go on our own -- or with a guide? I hate paying the exorbitant fees to the cruise line for a poor quality tour? Puesque hablo bien espanol, yo podria contratar con alguien por una excursion.
One unusual aspect of Montevideo which appears to differentiate it from other Latin American capitals is the age and extent of its European Jewish community. Although other big cities have active and large Jewish populations, Montevideo seems to have attracted Jewish people, from both Sephardic and Ashkenazic roots, as far back as the last 3rd of the 19th century.
Any ideas?

Travel Tips for Montevideo

Feria de Tristan Narvaja/flea market

by rafscab

The most famous flea market, full of antiques and curious things is Tristan Narvaja. The market is on the street, every sunday morning and is located almost in downtown Montevideo, so it's very easy to find it. Just take a taxi or a bus to 18 de Julio Ave. (main MVD ave.) and Tristan Narvaja st. Just in front of the University, Law faculty building and the National Library.
An advice: as in any other public and crowded place in the world, take care of your valuables, use common sense.
Anyway, along Tristan Narvaja st there are antiques shops and old bookstores open on weekdays that may be interesting.

Candombe

by andal13

Everywhere you can find people playing "candombe", African-Uruguayan music... If you want, you can dance it!!!!
These musicians played on Sarandí Street.

En todas partes puedes encontrar gente tocando candombe, la música afro-uruguaya... Si quieres, puedes bailar!!!!
Estos músicos tocaban por la Peatonal Sarandí.

In the Winter... pack / wear Layered Clothes

by Hexepatty

One med. / large roll away, but that depends on how long you will be, naturally... WINTER: Turtle necks, sweaters, scarf, gloves, hat, umbrella, good walking shoes... (Notice in the photo. Sweater is NICE! Short sleeve dress of mine is STUPID! I was cold!) You can bring everything, or you can by pretty much anything there, cheaper than US too. I like my own brands, so I brought my own, and supplimented w/ bargains while there. Hey, I'm all Digi at this point. Just make sure you bring enough charged batteries and/or pack a transformer so you can re-charge while on your trip. wouldn't know... yikes! Be sure to pack a bag so that you can bring things back home. I only wish I had enough space for wine!

the old coastal steamer

by globetrott

This old steam-boat found its "final drydock" at the entrance to the port of Montevideo, nice to look at and lighted at night, so it is some sort of a lighthouse as well, dont miss it, when approaching the port by cruiseship.
You will find this great ship opposite of the mountain that gave Montevideo its name (see my 4th pic!)

Summer Concerts

by andal13 about Municipal Bands

The Banda Sinfónica Municipal and Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo (Municipal Symphonic Band and Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo) give public concerts (for free) at different parks and squares in Montevideo, during summertime.
At these concerts the orchestras play popular music like folklore, tango or soundtracks.
I took the picture just before the last concert of the Symphonic Band at El Prado rosebed.

A light coat (just in case)

Un abrigo ligero (por si refresca)
