Due to the influx of tourists in high season, there is no shortage of accommodations up and down the coast. In the off season, you have your choice but in high season it might be best to plan ahead.
We sort of lucked into gettiing our flat with the help of an online friend.
This flat was in a new building with only one other flat. It was located in Punta Fria Piriapolis.
The flat had a living area with an twin sized extra bed, dining table, kitchen with fire place. There was one nice size bedroom, an entry way with large closet and room for suitcases. The bathroom had a good shower plus a seperate dressing area with sink. The balcony had a table and chairs, the perfect place for coffee or a sundowner.
Great views from the balcony out over the sea, beautiful sunsets, and birds visiting the nearby trees.
Very personable owner lives next door. A big plus, he speakes spanish and english. A large peninsula called Punta Ballena is located at the entrance of Punta del Este.
It was a beautiful but inhospitable area when artist Carlos Paez Vilaro bought the land on the cliffs. He had only a vision, no plans, when he and his friends started constructing Casa Pueblo. It sits on cliffs facing west, has not a single straight line in its interior, and its color makes one think of the Mediterranean.
From the first time I saw a picture of this hotel/museum I knew that someday I had to go see it in person. I was not disappointed when I finally did. Like someone once said it is hard to describe the indescribable.
This hotel sits on the cliffs overlooking the bay. There are many rocks at the shoreline where birds like to gather. There are two pools and a spa. The building has the hotel, restaurant, and the art museum. Actually it all looks like a big museum.

I stayed here for three nights at the beginning of my trip to Uruguay, and one night at the end, on my way out. It's a big house located in the centre of the new town, about 10 minutes walk from the old town. Charo, the very friendly lady owner, can usually be found in the clothing store next door, which she also owns.
The house has a variety of rooms. The first time I lucked out and got a huge room with bathroom, and even a little kitchen with table and fridge! If I remember well, it was only US $7 a night! The second time I got a tiny room without bathroom for something like $4 or $5.
Not much in terms of breakfast (possibly some dry pastry and orange drink if you're lucky); better to get something in town.
Quiet, centrally located place. Very friendly and congenial owner. Possibility of getting a big room for a few dollars!
