Posta del Cangrejo: Punta del Este - Boutique Hotel

La Posta del Cangrejo is in La Barra outside of Punta Del Este and is a small boutique hotel with whitewashed walls and blue windows.

This is also one of the best restaurants to eat in Punta Del Este/Barra

Hotel Lafayette: Affordable Luxury...sort of

We had originally booked into somewhere much cheaper, but found we didn't have our own bathroom, so we quickly found the Hotel Lafayette. The rooms were clean, although sometimes the a/c didn't work and once the handle in the shower fell off. But after a very long flight, it was wonderful. Breakfast was very good each morning, also.

The front desk staff (all men, to my knowledge) were always gracious and helpful, though only a few spoke more than a few words of English.

Doubles were US$62/night (Suites were US$82, but don't bother, they just have more furniture)

Free wireless, though it's not advertised. In fact, when I asked for an internet connection, the front desk sold me a card that could only be used on the PC in the "Business Center" downstairs. When I discovered that there was at least one wireless router installed in the hallway, I rejoiced!

La Casa de Charo: Big homey house in Colonia

I stayed here for three nights at the beginning of my trip to Uruguay, and one night at the end, on my way out. It's a big house located in the centre of the new town, about 10 minutes walk from the old town. Charo, the very friendly lady owner, can usually be found in the clothing store next door, which she also owns.

The house has a variety of rooms. The first time I lucked out and got a huge room with bathroom, and even a little kitchen with table and fridge! If I remember well, it was only US $7 a night! The second time I got a tiny room without bathroom for something like $4 or $5.

Not much in terms of breakfast (possibly some dry pastry and orange drink if you're lucky); better to get something in town.

Quiet, centrally located place. Very friendly and congenial owner. Possibility of getting a big room for a few dollars!

The shared bathroom is HUGE!!!

Hotel Colon, Piriapolis: Like a little castle

I didn't stay at this hotel, because it was fully booked by the time I arrived in Piriapolis. You probably have to book ahead to stay here, because it's so pretty and such good value for all the amenities you get. I was quoted $25 US for a single room, the same price I paid for a blah room at a so-so hotel down the road!

It's right across from the beach on the main street in Piriapolis.

Unique architecture (!). Art display inside. Indoor pool. Restaurant.

Barcelo Club del Lago: Gorgeous, Out-of-the-way Hotel

The Barcelo Club is a chain hotel in South America. Barcelo Club del Lago is located near Lago Sauce just outside of Punta Del Este. Its has the most incredible view of the lake, indoor and outdoor pools (the outdoor one has a bar IN the pool) and there is also a golf course, although that wasnt really my interest. It is between Montevideo and Punta Del Este-- the main two cities in Uruguay so you get the best of both worlds while staying in a very serene spot. The only drawback is that you have to take a taxi to town and the rates can differ wildly.

Rent my house: Montevideo, Uruguay´s Capital

Hi I´m Luis from Montevideo, living in Barcelona, Spain since 2004.
I´m tango dancer so can help you to visit tango places, milongas (to dance), to take classes, to see shows, or any other information you need.
I`m renting my apto/house with all my furnitures in Montevideo center, all in very good condition as you will see in the photos, the house is near the center, so you can go by walking everywhere, down town, beach, museums, restuarants, also there are many buses one block from the house, so it´s a good place to stay.
If don´t care staying with uruguayan students the other option is renting place in student hostel, in front the Legislative Palace, with all services too, it´s cheapper than the house, but you must be less than 30 years old.
Best Regards, Luis.

A couple from EEUU rented my apto/house in january 2005 and he takes some photos, as she dance tango, the directions are :

Hotel Bermudez: Just in front of the river

This is a nice place if you don´t mind some people sitting and chatting outside at evenings...The owners are really fine, and it has a water pump in the courtyard, from which you can get fresh and clean water whenever you want.
It´s just in front the main jetty, where you can sit for while and watch the wonderful sunsets.

San Pedro de Timote: Perfect - 160km away from Montevideo

Horseriding (more than 4 hours a day), eating (they have a real cook!), sleeping (bedrooms are perfect and so quiet), swimming (they have 3 swimming pool, one indoor), taking photos (including at night), watching stars (so many!!!!!!!!), watching birds and other fauna (dogs, donkeys, nandus, carpinchos....). Sport facilities (tennis, raquet ball, snooker, ping pong...). Baby sitters. Church.
Nothing else. Enough?

The water is very very good, they have their own source.
Service is very efficient.
Building is from the 19th century, english touch in south America.
They have a terrific library full of old books and magazines from the beginning of the century. Impressive!

Hotel Paza Mayor: Historical in Colonia

Very charming hotel, in an old typical building , before a house of some noble spanish or portuguese, or even english or French as Colonia had all of them for more then 300 years. Was then transformed into a firehouse, the "casa de bomberos de Colonia".

View is very nice.
Ask someone to show you the escape tunnels of the place.
