The Ermitage Hotel: The Ermitage Hotel

by malianrob

We stayed at the Ermitage Hotel for about days while we were in Montevideo. The first thing is the staff: We got the best customer service, everyone was so pleasant and went above and beyond to make sure that we were happy and comfortable while we were there. We were upgraded to a suite maybe because we came during low season. The suite was a two bedroom one bath. We had a tv, fridge, balcony with great views. One block from the beach. Its a three star hotel that blew away the three star hotels in Argentina and in Brazil which we had stayed at. I liked the location because we were close to the beach and restaurants, banks, and a residential area that had a farmers market.
The one thing that the hotel didnt have which would have been nice if I came during the summer would be a pool. But we were close to the beach so I guess thats not too much of a big deal.

Punta Fria Flat: Live like a local

by kyoub

Due to the influx of tourists in high season, there is no shortage of accommodations up and down the coast. In the off season, you have your choice but in high season it might be best to plan ahead.
We sort of lucked into gettiing our flat with the help of an online friend.
This flat was in a new building with only one other flat. It was located in Punta Fria Piriapolis.
The flat had a living area with an twin sized extra bed, dining table, kitchen with fire place. There was one nice size bedroom, an entry way with large closet and room for suitcases. The bathroom had a good shower plus a seperate dressing area with sink. The balcony had a table and chairs, the perfect place for coffee or a sundowner.

Great views from the balcony out over the sea, beautiful sunsets, and birds visiting the nearby trees.
Very personable owner lives next door. A big plus, he speakes spanish and english.

Le Petit: Hotel in Maldonado

by Valeggua

Hotel le Petit is situated at the dynamic plaza of Maldonado. It's located above a little shopping mall and it's a quiet noisy from the street.
The rooms are 'petit' but very well kept, with cable tv and a nice view over the plaza.
Staying in Maldonado is much cheaper than Punta del Este, and
from here you can easily take the bus to Punta.

situated in the heart of Maldonado.
We payed US36,- for a double room one night.

Hostelling Colonial: Youth Hostel in Colonia

by Valeggua

Pleasant hostel in Colonia del Sacramento for budget travellers. The young staff is very friendly and you can rent bikes for free. There's also a community room with television, magazines, and computer with internet.
Rooms are simple, you can take a private (twin) room or shared with other travellers. Shared bathroom and laundry service.

Cheapest in Colonia (from US 4,-a night)

Casapueblo: On the cliffs

by kyoub

A large peninsula called Punta Ballena is located at the entrance of Punta del Este.
It was a beautiful but inhospitable area when artist Carlos Paez Vilaro bought the land on the cliffs. He had only a vision, no plans, when he and his friends started constructing Casa Pueblo. It sits on cliffs facing west, has not a single straight line in its interior, and its color makes one think of the Mediterranean.

From the first time I saw a picture of this hotel/museum I knew that someday I had to go see it in person. I was not disappointed when I finally did. Like someone once said it is hard to describe the indescribable.

This hotel sits on the cliffs overlooking the bay. There are many rocks at the shoreline where birds like to gather. There are two pools and a spa. The building has the hotel, restaurant, and the art museum. Actually it all looks like a big museum.
I would highly recommend staying here for a few nights.

Palacio Hotel: Palacio Hotel, heart of Montevideo

by Valeggua

I fell in love with this nice hotel with it's lovely elevator, in the heart of Montevideo. It's located right behind la plaza d la independencia and surrounded by pubs and cafes.

Rooms are very cute a little tiny, nice balconies, I loved it. Prices are cheap for an hotel located in this part of the city.

Most friendly staff. Very well located

Colonia: Posada del Río: a budget hotel

by alza

Extremely pleasant welcome, nice cool lobby opening on an indoor garden with rooms all around. Quiet place. Ideal location in the Barrio Histórico, near the beach and the great views on the Río de la Plata.

Colonia really is a jewel of a place! The pic looks somewhat like the hotel but it was taken nearby, on Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs), a cobbled street.

Youth Hostel in town: In Monvevideo

by alza

I'll spare you the long, feely stuff. This hostel is close to everything downtown, has a kitchen, a large community room and a terrace overlooking a quiet street, where I spent lots of time dreaming away the night while watching the huge leaves shivering in the night wind.

I got to Montevideo in the middle of the Carnival, sometime in February, and the town was spooky quiet. Someone from Montevideo told me later that folks leave town during Carnival. That explains the empty streets. I think I was alone in my dorm at the Youth Hostel. I thought this would be fanTAStic... but trying to sleep there was worse than a night in hell. First night, a horrible deep throat sound erupted from the ceiling, all night and every minute of it. I couldn't figure out what it was and where it came from for a long while... Around 5 a.m., I realised it was the Hostal Keeper, who slept across from my dorm.
I mentioned this to him the next day and he said, off-handedly... "Yeah, I have a bad cough. Hope it didn't bother you!" Man, it drove me crackers!
He was worse on the second night... It was sooo bad that really, I should have written to the Hostal managers and asked for a refund. They shouldn't allow anyone THAT sick to work the night shift.

Anyway, so there was a huge kitchen. I had to scrub the teapot for an hour before it was clean enough to make tea in but then I was the only one using that teapot afterwards so it was worth it. Met a few interesting travellers, until an American took to me and relished in sharing his vision of America and its economy with me... in English, which I had avoided speaking by then for 5 months. Honestly, I never like to discuss American monetary policy or anything related to MONEY, so I particularly dislike being taken hostage by a guy who just needs to hear himself speak English because he can't speak anything else and no one is talking to him... except stupid me who was crazy enough to be polite and answer his "hello there!" The guy went wild when he realised I understood English and never stopped to breathe for 5 minutes in his excitement at telling me about the superiority of the American economy etc etc etc. I finished my cup of tea and left for my dorm -- I heard him carry on for a full 5 minutes.
The next morning, when he said hello, I pretended I was Brazilian.

One thing good, this place is downtown. Kind of cool looking too. Very inexpensive, just like most hostels.
There is Internet, but it was taken over by staff or their friends all the time.

Estancia las Canadas: Authentic estancia

by melosh

The traveller looking for a tourist resort should look elsewhere. There is nothing simulated about this estancia and there is no jacuzzi, swimming pool or cable TV. Instead you experience a rustic, authentic manor home. The owner, Cecilia, shares her family history, ranch food and drink. Even the horseback riding (and in my case, riding lessons) is included.

Located 283 kilometers from Montevideo near Paso de los Toros, this is not a day trip destination.

PS: Canada (actually it is not an 'n', but the Spanish letter n-yea) has nothing to do with the country to the north of the USA. It means a glen or dale between mountains.

Hotel Central (x2): Three stars, but thirty years ago

by melosh

In the small towns of upcountry Uruguay you will find three star hotels that have clearly lost their luster. Who knows when they put up the sign with the three stars, but it was probably decades ago. Appropriately, these hotels also asked for room tariffs consistent with their true quality --or perhaps you could say that the price levels were as old as the hotels.

In Tacaurambo and Trienta y Tres I stayed at two unaffiliated hotels both called 'Hotel Central'. They were both less than $10 (USD) a night and the room included a shower and TV. Both also had places to safely park my rental car for the night.

The most noteable characteristic was the three stars that did not relate to quality or to price. As one might guess, they also were both central in the town and just a few blocks from the main plaza.

I saw other three star hotels that looked the part.
