A couple years ago, however, the area was not as safe--Altamira Plaza is one of the well known "Opposition" gathering spots in Caracas, and the plaza was the one in the news with the shooting death of opposition protesters in 2003. Many people still gather in the plaza today, and it is now safe for all.
The hotel itself had an instance of fire in 2002, and the fire safety equipment did not work. I do not know if the hotel has fixed this problem or not, but it is something that should be looked into if you are staying there.
Today, I would feel perfectly fine staying in this hotel IF they have fixed the fire safety problem. I have heard it is a very nice hotel.
