Recommendable clean and save hotel not far from the historical center and the Metro. Inside there is a good italian restaurant with bar. Paid 75000 Bs./double in Jan. 08; room had TV, telephone and quiet aircon. English is spoken.

Hotel Santiago: A bed and not much else
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel Santiago is about 20 minutes drive from the airport in non peak hour. The rooms are fairly basic. Yes there is airconditioning but it is loud and rattly. The standard of cleanliness is not that great. My room had supposedly just been cleaned, but when i turned on the shower you could see the dirt washing off the floor. The resturuant supposedly specialises in sea food but the fish I had was dry and not that tasty, the salads are huge and you get veges with your main anyway. The second meal I had was spaghetti bolognaise, basically they tipped some tomato sauce over some mince and stirred it around with out actually cooking the meat. It took one bite to realise this, but that was enough to give me food poisoning for 5 days.......need I say more.

Hotel Savoy Cumberland: Savoy   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • After staying at a shadier hostel (the "backpackers hostel") my friend and I decided to shell out ten or so more bucks each and head to a nicer hotel. Savoy is near Sabana Grande and the Chacaito metro stop, near a large market, and it's not regarded as safe as Altamira but it's east of the center and pretty well located. Many people warned us of danger in the area, but I never had any problems. It's like a nice American hotel (the most valid comparison I can make being American) but more 70sish and cut in half. They don't skimp on staff and service, have internet and a restaurant/bar and pretty good security and alot of taxis a night. I definitely recommend it to those who can't afford the luxury of Altamira but are weary of some of the seedier places.

InterContinental Hotels TAMANACO CARACAS: Tamanaco   Compare Rates NEW!
I haven't stayed here, but have been here dozens of times for social events. The hotel is luxiurious but a little older than some. It has a lot of history to it. The pool area is lovely and there is a great little restaurant out there poolside. The facilities seem to cater to both Spanish and English speakers, with a nice little bookstore inside. The food for our socials has been average, but the food by the pool was delicious.
Friends who have stayed there say the rooms are a bit cramped, being older, and a bit run down.
Still, this is a very nice facility and it is in a very nice and safe part of town.
You are very close to Las Mercedes in this hotel, but you will do well if you have a car, as the hotel sits up on a hill and it is not the easiest thing to walk to and from the hotel. It is possible, but not easy....

  • Theme: Hotel
  • Address: Avenida Principal de las Mercedes
  • Directions: Drive down Avenida Principal until it ends and you are looking at the Autopista. You turn right and immediately move to the left turn lane. Turn left and head up the hill .... this is the driveway to the hotel.

InterContinental Hotels TAMANACO CARACAS: Still one of the best in Caracas   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Tamanaco in the upscale Mercedes neighboorrhood is still one of the best options if you are in Caracas for business or pleasure, even though the recent renovations cannot hide the fact that it is well over 50 years old.

The service is excellent as are the restaurant, the pool and the overall location of the Tamanaco.

Pool, and the great views overlooking the city.

JW Marriott Hotel Caracas: Relatively New and Upscale   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at the Marriott for 3 months beginning in August 2002. At that time, the hotel was new and didn't have many people there.
In the past years, the Marriott has become one of the most popular hotels in Caracas. The hotel has many guests at any time and they seem to be doing well, as they are building an additional building across the street.
There are two towers to this hotel. One of them has what you might call "normal hotel rooms". By this, I mean that a typical room will have 2 beds, a small desk area with chairs, an armoire/tv unit, a mini bar, and a bathroom. This is the tower we lived in. Our rooms adjoined (we had 2) although I am not sure if all rooms have this ability.
We had a lovely bathroom with marble and glass fixtures.
The other tower is said to have a more "apartment" feel....but I get the feeling that the rooms do not adjoin there.
This hotel is very safe, in a nice part of town, has several restaurants within walking distance, and the staff is bilingual.
There is an outdoor pool between the towers and they have a nice workout area next to the pool.
One problem then, and now, is no ice machines on any floor. If you need ice, you must call room service. This was a real issue when we lived there for 3 months!!!
The hotel sits on a somewhat famous street corner. For years and years, musicians would gather on this street corner (weekends) and wait for someone to drive by and hire them. The addition of the Marriott did not stop this tradition. The musicians still stand on the corner and play their instruments each weekend. Rather interesting once you know the history!
When you first arrive in Caracas, the area may seem scary--that is the fear of the unknown! In reality, we found it quite safe to walk from the hotel to Subway, McDonalds, Papa Johns, Centro Lido, and Gourmet Market. At night, I prefer to walk on the street closer to the Avila, as it is not as dark.
This area is NOT downtown...it is the El Rosal area of Caracas. You really do not want to stay downtown...

JW Marriott Hotel Caracas: Luxury Hotel   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The JW Marriott in Caracas is one of the more expensive, luxury hotels in Caracas. We stayed there knowing it would be more expensive than most others, but wanted the greater level of security and wanted to stay in a nicer area given what we heard regarding how potentially dangerous Caracas could be. That was true of both accounts with the Marriot. The service was also very attentive as you would expect. The rooms themselves were not anything to write home about, but what you could expect from a standard Marriott hotel. The one drag was that its pretty far from teh airport (like most of the hotels downtown) so I remember the transfer cost being quite expensive. We did not see much to do as far as immediate surroundings of the hotel, but the good nightlife spots were a short can ride away.

Jw Marriott Caracas: First Class Business Hotel   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • I've stayed at the Tamanaco Intercontinentel and Radisson Eurobuilding hotels and the JW Marriott is the best. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous and take great care to remember your name (even bell staff days later). The rooms are a good size (standard by American standards, enormous by European standards) and have high quality furniture and fantastically luxurious bedding. Good selection of TV channels. Excellent restaurant on site, both dinners and breakfasts. Seems to be in a high class part of downtown although I don't know anyone who would wander around Caracas alone without a local.

Lido Hotel, Marriot Hotel, Embassy Suites: Stay at "urbanizacion" El Rosal
  • Satisfaction:
  • I would stay in a neighborhood ("urbanizacion", in spanish ) called "El Rosal " since it's location is perfect: close to all the happening places of Caracas (La Castellana, Las Mercedes, etc ), it's relatively safe and near the Metro (subway). At El Rosal you can find a Marriot Hotel, an Embassy Suites and the Lido Hotel . They're all very nice, although I'd stay at the Lido because it has a mall attached with the same name, where you can conveniently do some shopping.
