Posada Suiza: See Los Llanos

Lovely posada. Ricardo is a slick salesman when it comes to tours - but the Llanos tour is worth it! You won't see the Llanos any cheaper. Don't believe him when he says 'boat ride' though, it's whitewater rafting, helmets and rocks and people going overboard... Lovely people, fantastic guides and memorable rum-soaked nightime safaris on the roof of a 4x4.

Unique Quality: The tours.

Estancia San Francisco: Very plush and aristocratic

This exclusive estancia about 10 minutes from the city of Merida was rather beautiful. The grounds were spectacular, with a rushing stream, grazing sheep, swans, and horses. The rooms were actually duplexes with a downstairs living area and an upstairs bedroom designed with mountain, rustic architecture. The views were spectacular. The main lodge was quite manorial adorned with fluffy seating, tapestries, imposing chandeliers, and a roaring firplace. No one spoke English, and since my Spanish is worse than my French, it was very embarassing for me. However, the staff was wonderfully warm and accommodating.

Unique Quality: The grounds and architecture were really something special.

Posada Suiza: Not all are Germans...

Just 50 m beneath Posada Alemania is Posada Suiza - which is run.. no not by a swiss guy but by Ricardo from Venezuala who speaks a perfect german as well as english and french. I liked this place more than Posada Alemania because of its very friendly and familiar atmosphere and the friendly staff. They also offer tours at a good value in cooperation with colibri tours.
Single room was 20000 Bs (~ € 8,00)

Posada Alemania: Don't run away of Germans

This is quite a unique place. Despite the name of the hostel the manager is a crazy swiss guy. His name is Bruno and he is as much crazy as he is manager (please decide yourself). Fact is, he is really helpful, some people (like me) even found him sometimes a bit too helpful . He knows everything and everyone in and around Merida, though, and will entertain you with his stories if you like.

Unique Quality: The hostel is fair priced, clean, with nice rooms and 2 real unique patios, where coolibris come to the blossoms in the mornings and where you can just have a good rum and a good book in one of the hammocks in the relax patio. There is always a cool beer in the fridge, please fill up when you drink some.
