Margarita Suites: Some discomforts
Been to Isla Margarita in June 2008.
Yes, take cash. I wasn't able to withdraw cash from any ATM, not with credit cards nor with debit cards. However, I was able to pay my hotel (and in their restaurant) with my Visa card.
I stayed in Porlamar at Margarita Suites:
http://www.venezuelatuya.com/hoteles/mostrarhoteleng.htm?503,Hotel_Margarita_Suites
http://www.hotelmargaritasuites.com/venezuela/index.htm
Sometimes their webpage is not "up"...typical for Venezuela....
I didn't want to stay in a resort where you don't know if you're in Venezuela or Spain or Turkey or any other tropical country.
But I had to "pay" for that, hours without water, electricity cuts, 5 x changing of room (leaking bathtub, no phone, you name it).
I payed around € 60 per room per night, including breakfast.
I ran into some hostels when searching the internet, a.o.:

Margarita International resort: Old and boring buffet
We stayed a couple of days there. This hotel is located far from anything and except the nice swimming pools there's nothing incredible about this place. The light cocktails/national beers served all day are disapointing. The buffet is terrible (pasta and rice for lunch and dinner everyday with a possibility to order a burger...) which is not at all what I'm looking for when travelling to a place full of delicious seafood/fish
Unique Quality: swimming pool

huh Trudel's garden: Mosquito garden...
The house we rented for 4 people was really spatious and fully furnished (even had a blender!!). The terrace was nice (especially the hamock) after a hard day at the beach!
However, when i first entered the house i wondered why there was some mosquito repellent and quickly figured it out. It's awfull. Even with a huge quantity of quimicals on your body, insects still find the little tiny space without and will bite you there. After a week, we looked like we had chickenpox!!!!
Unique Quality: it's really great to have a full house to yourself...
But forget about cooking as venezuelian supermakets have 1) food shortages 2) it's cheaper to go to restaurants or to eat an empanada!

Costa Linda Beach: Perfect service and sorroundings
This place is awsome for a shorter or longer stay in Playa El Agua. It's a small hotel/hostel with atmosphere, close to the beach, cheap, good service, clean, nice, finely decorated.
Unique Quality: The relaxed atmosphere, rooms, the whole hotel area.

Hilton Margarita and Suites: Likely the best resort on the island.
I stayed at the Hilton for a week. I was in the hotel side; not the suites side. They looked like a night and day difference. The first half was for work; the second half was for play.
For VZ, it was a decent facility. Downfalls were that more than half the staff did not speak English. Only luck was at the front desk; all other staff had minimal English skills. I can't compare to other hotels on Margarita, but these rooms were about the equivalent to a US Best Western, more run down, though minor improvements were in construction.
Unique Quality: The hotel had a great lagoon pool with poolside bars (no swim-up bar, bummer!) and slides.
Breakfast was included with the daily stay and it was bountiful, but never changed the entire week. Same thing every day. Quality was perhaps a notch above average.
At $30 for 45 minutes, massages came cheap, and they did a nice job. :)
Average (at best) gym. On-site stores/shopping. Small casino on property.

Laguna Mar Resort & Casino: Excellent All-Inclusive Resort
We booked the Laguna Mar on the basis of the description online from First Choice and from reviews online and we were not disappointed. Everything that we expected we got. (We were there from 17th -31st August 06).
We stayed in a Master Suite in the South Tower and unusually for First Choice we had a balcony (in fact it was huge with a lovely view over the pool and the rest of the complex). The reason for the Suite was due to an admin error, our booked two rooms were not available so my wife, my two daughters (Claire & Hannah) and I were forced to share. However the downside of sharing was more than made up with the view from the balcony, two substantial bathrooms and lots of space. The Air-Con is cool but my wife sorted out a nice medium and we suffered no problems with condensation.
A number of previous reviewers had suggested taking small dollar bills to use as tips for the bar staff and I would seriously advocate this. Each day and night the staff at the pool bar (Tomas and Martin – I think) and the lobby bar (Pedro especially, although all four regular staff were outstanding). We only had to approach the pool bar and Tomas or Martin were pouring our drinks. The bar staff in the lobby are very watchful but discreet and would bring over fresh drinks as our current ones were nearly empty. No queuing up.
I am not going to go into great details over this and that restaurant, but I will stress that the Cazon Grill at the beach is OUTSTANDING. A previous report stated that the food was the same, well correct me if I am wrong but what do you get or expect from a barbecue. The food was freshly barbecued on the grill before you and yes it was chicken, pork steak, fish and beef steaks each day, but beautifully prepared, cooked and served by cooks who enjoyed what they were doing. The younger ones were also catered with burgers, hot dogs and chips. As with all the over restaurants there was a fine variety of salad ingredients and fresh fruit for afters.
Unique Quality: See above review

Hilton Margarita and Suites: Highly Recommended Hotel in Margarita
I would recommend Margarita's Hilton hotel because it is very clean, everyone is hospitable. The Atmosphere is great and very well kept. The view is beautiful and their Casino is one of Margarita's BEST. The hotel staff is very helpful and once you walk in you'll see why its so recommended ...its a very busy place in the lobby.
Unique Quality: It is located in Costa Azul area very close to Playa Moreno, their on site Casio is one of Margarita's MOST busiest and their river pool and landscaping are spectacular. One of them even over looks the beach and it drops off as if it goes out to the ocean but it doesn't.
The rooms are very comfortable and clean. Room service food is great too! Conventions .. Tours ..car rentals .. its all available at the Hotel or close by. CCM shopping plaza is right in the same complex as The Hilton. Beauty Salons are plently available.
