Medienhafen (Media Port): The clock of the Rheinturm
  • Tip Rating:
  • At night there's a clock at the side of the Rhine tower. Have a look in the evening and try to figure out how it works. I understood it but I'm not telling you - it's more fun to find out yourself! Little hint: This picture was taken at 6.49 p.m., 14 seconds before 6:50 p.m.!

    Kaiserswerth: Kaiserswerth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth is in the north of Düsseldorf at the Rhine. It's a beautiful part of town with a lovely market square, a *** restaurant, a wonderful beergarden (Burghof) and the ruins of the emperial palatinate ("Kaiserpfalz") from the 9th century. It used to be the home for Emperor Barbarossa and was destroyed in the Spanish succession war later.

Off The Beaten Path: ARAG insurance headquarters
  • Tip Rating:
  • The scyscraper of ARAG insurance company is located "in my back garden". With 125 metres it is the highest office building in Düsseldorf. It was designed by famous architect Sir Norman Foster and these days it wears the colours of the Olympic dream of Düsseldorf....

The tram stop "Heinrichstrasse" is right next to the building so if you are interested in architecture this is where to go. Make sure you come up for a coke if you go ;-)

  • "Blind people can only walk along here when they are drunk"... that's what a friend of mine used to say about this pavement. When you look at it from the side it looks like the path is not straight but it has waves. A funny feature for a path along the river I think.

Food and Drink: The best ice cream in Düsseldorf - Unbehaun Eis

  • The best ice cream!
  • by sabsi
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • This little ice cream place only offers 5 different flavours of ice cream: Vanilla, Chocolate, Nut, Strawberry and Lemon. You can have a pot filled with all of them - they are all lovely (and this must be true, because I normally hate chocolate & nut icecream!)

    Nordpark: Nordpark

  • This is the park where the Aqua Zoo and the Japanese Gardens are located. The Japanese Gardens are rather small but quite cute, the Aqua Zoo is not really my cup of tea (too many stuffed animals and fishes). And the Nordpark is a nice place for a walk in the sun or a game of Boule.

Outside Düsseldorf: Mettmann (Mince Meat Man)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Düsseldorf Outside Düsseldorf
  • Downtown Mettmann
  • by sabsi
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Mettmann is a small town in the "Bergisches Land". It's the town I work in and I normally just see the same spots here ("our" villa and the local supermarket) but there's also a lovely Market Square with a big church surrounded by cute slate buildings here. The name Mettmann is a bit funny actually as the translation would be "Mince Meat Man".

The christmas market on Mettmann's market square is one of the nicest ones I know because it is not commercialised as many others.

Near Mettmann there's the Neanderthal .... the valley where the Neanderthalers came from. There's a Neanderthal Museum here which I still have only seen from the outside.

Off The Beaten Path: Light Masterplan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Düsseldorf has a new "light masterplan". The goal is to light the axis of the city in a very arty way. In Hofgarten (near the Goethe Museum) you find these light benches. A great sight and photo opportunity at night!!!

Hi Sabs, hope you had a great time at the big Euromeet. You must be all VT-ed out, huh? Just letting you know that I finished my Düsseldorf page. I should have paid better attention to your tour (haha), but I still think it came out okay. Best, Bill

Great page, Sabsi. I am researching for a stay in Dusseldorf later this summer. Can you tell me why there is no accommodation available at the end of May there? Does something happen at this time?
