Getting TO/AROUND: Düsseldorf (and actually all of Northrhine Westphalia) has a great public transport system. The company that runs the system is called "Rheinbahn".

You can use trams, busses or the subway within Düsseldorf. Tickets aren't exactly cheap. A single ticket is €2,10! If you are travelling in a group the better deal is to get a day ticket. It costs € 10,60 and it works as group ticket for five people! A day ticket for one person costs 4,90.

Be careful! Night service is a bit on the weak side so trams stop running around midnight during the week and you will get home best by taxi. At the weekend some trams run until 2 in the morning but the system is quite confusing. In autumn 2006 they finally invented the wheel in Düsseldorf: There are night busses now! I haven't tried them yet but I will let you know once I did.

The S-Bahn will bring you to all the other big places around (like Cologne, Essen, Dortmund etc) or to the airport.

Getting TO/AROUND: Düsseldorf's Airport is the biggest one in the region and one of the biggest airports in Germany. There are three terminals, A, B and C.

It's easy to reach by car and by S-Bahn from Düsseldorf. By S-Bahn you get from Düsseldorf main station (Hauptbahnhof) to the airport in 11 minutes. Take S1 and leave the train at Düsseldorf-Flughafen Bahnhof. From there the skytrain will take you to the terminal. The S7 even goes directly to the airport terminal building (Flughafen Terminal). It takes 14 minutes.

This airport also is linked to lots of memories for me as it's also the airport from where I started my first flight ever (see picture and guess where I went :-) and it's the airport where I said Hello too few and Good Bye too many times ;)

    Trains: Main Station (Hauptbahnhof)
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: There is two big disadvantages of arriving in Düsseldorf by train:

Firstly the main station isn't a very welcoming place unfortunately. It's quite dark and dodgy actually. I hope the we-are-making-our-main-station-nicer boom will hit Düsseldorf as well some day.

The other problem with the main station is that it isn't located directly in the city centre. When I came here for my interview I had a little time before my train left and decided to walk into town. I walked and walked and walked... and realised that there's no city centre nearby ;-) Better jump into the subway and get off after 3 stops - you will be right in the old town!

Greetings Sabsi, from Sunny and very HOT Athens. I think I am beginning to want to visit those 'colder' spots as well! You look so happy with your partner in Switzerland! I'll be back to 'read' all the interesting stuff! Janet

Hi Sabs, hope you had a great time at the big Euromeet. You must be all VT-ed out, huh? Just letting you know that I finished my Düsseldorf page. I should have paid better attention to your tour (haha), but I still think it came out okay. Best, Bill
