Hi!

Berlin for me is the smell of the subway and a Döner for lunch .... to drive through Brandenburg Gate and to walk in the green .... the markets of Kreuzberg and to sit in my friend's kitchen .... memories of painting the wall and my rowing days .... building site seeing and toy salesmen in cafes .... to watch people who live at Adlon but to stay somewhere else .... boat trips and bus trips ....

.... it's also the capital of Germany, it used to be the world's biggest building site in the 1990s and a metropolis of the 1920s and home of the first gay mayor in Germany now "...und das ist auch gut so"
Standing on the wall :)
For me Berlin is simply one of the most thrilling and the most historic place in Germany and maybe in whole Europe. You can still smell history there!!! It will never get boring to go there because everytime I get back, the city has changed so much, and there's so much to do!

Follow me through Berlin for a while now... this is my personal Berlin.... full of memories of the divided Berlin and the new Berlin .....

As Bono of U2 said: "Berlin is the new New York".... Not sure, but it definitely is my "big city" ... or as a Berliner would say (maybe) "Ick steh auf Berlin" ;-)

Make sure not to forget to visit travelogues to read and see how the Potsdamer Platz has changed from 1987 up to now, personal memories of the time when Berlin was still divided into two parts, another personal story of how we went for a walk where we would have been shot a year earlier, how Christo wrapped the Reichstag, Pictures from a rowing trip into the wild east and what you can see on a cruise on Berlin's rivers.

++++++

In case you are wondering about the title of my page. "Berlin Berlin, Dein Herz kennt keine Mauern" means "Berlin Berlin, your heart doesn't know any walls". It's from an old song from the 1980s by "John F. und den Gropiuslerchen".

Pros:"You can smell history here, it's cheap, it rocks and it's always changing"
Cons:"Don't go if you are into beautiful cities, Berlin isn't beautiful - it's charming!"
In A Nutshell:"This city never stops changing!"

 Some great information here about roads less travelled in Berlin. The personal perspective is wonderful and really gives me a feel for the city. :))

 Hi Sabsi, thank you so much for great tips/pics. I love it how you mix the old (wall) with the new Berlin. This year I'm going back 1st time in 20!years (I didn't take a lot of pics then, i was only 16, but thank you for doing it for me!) Linda
