Stockholm - my homecity

by jacob_m - last update: Sep 11, 2005

Even though I have travelled a lot I still think Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
It is constructed on 14 islands with bridges connecting most of them. it is also one of the cleanest cities in the world and it is actually possible to go swimming next to the city hall in the summer, I doubt many capitals can beat that.
Forget all prejudices about the climate, it is not possible go skiing all year around and people are not eskimoes. Although it is pretty cold in the winter with an average temperature around -10°C, occasionally it drops to -15 or -20.
But in the summer the weather is much better, average temperature is between 20 and 25°C and a few days a year it even reaches 30°C or higher.
Stockholm is also an extremely safe city to visit and people who don't speak Swedish don't have to worry, it's compulsory to study English at least six years in school, most people actually study it for nine years or more.

VARMT VÄLKOMMEN!!!
What not to miss in Stockholm:
*The old town: The first city of Stockholm was actually just this small island. Most of the houses are from the 13-14th centuries.
*The royal castle: To be found on the northern part of the same island.
*The royal castle of Drottningholm: About 10 km west of Stockholm. This is where the royal family lives during the spring and summer.
*Södermalm: Especially the area around "Slussen" and "Katarina" (NE part of Södermalm). Many houses from the 19th century and at the street "Fjällgatan" you get an astounding view of Stockholm.
*Skansen: This open-air "museum" is both a zoo, a park and a museum of the old Swedish culture and habits.
*The museum of Wasa (Wasamuseet): This museum shows the ship of Wasa which sank just outside Stockholm in the 16th century but was found and salved in the 60's. Very well-preserved!
*The archipelago: If visiting Stockholm in the summer, allow one day for a boattrip in the beautiful archipelago, you won't regret it!
MAP OF STOCKHOLM
This is the same picture as the one on the top of my page but on this one I have put some numbers refering to some famous sights in Stockholm.
Enlarge the picture and read the descriptions below!!
1: The island of Djurgården where you can find for example the outdoor museum "Skansen" and the museum of Wasa.
2: The island of Södermalm.
3: The old town (Gamla stan), the part of Stockholm which originates from the 14th century, the royal castle is also located on this island.
4: The city centre.
5: The ferry to Finland, this ferry is operated by Viking Line, you can clearly see the water way out of Stockholm to the archipelago and later to the Baltic sea to the right on the picture.
