The Almost Romantic Agilkia Island...

by coceng - last update: Aug 5, 2005

ASWAN<<<<<PHILAE ISLAND>>>>>TEMPLES OF ABU SIMBEL
EGYPT
25th April 2005 ( Monday )
Philae (pronounced 'Fi-Lee') Island is one of the best excursions from Aswan.
We took a tour to reach there.
I sort of agreed with Pat that we could take the tour although if I was on my own, I would walk to Philae Island !

INFORMATION...

Also called as Agilkia Island, Philae is so romantic if not for people hassling you while wandering on this island !
People coming here by boats just to see :
The Temple Of Isis

The story goes something like this : After the building of the Aswan dam, rising waters surged into the temple.
There used to be a time where tourists had to see this temple from the surface of the water !
UNESCO came in & ordered a massive operation in 1972 to 1980 to relocate its temple to a nearby island called Agilkia Island (hence the 2 names...), which was then landscaped to match the original site.
People came here from Aswan, either by organized tours or by taxi; They would be dropped at a motorboat dock called Shallal, about 2 km from The Old Aswan Dam.
Here, get the ticket & take the boat to reach The Philae Island.
This temple & its surrounding remnants have bewitched visitors for centuries !
Nevertheless, NOW we the temple on a different setting with a romantic backdrop surrounded by the beautiful blue water...
