The Grandeur Of Egypt !

by coceng - last update: Jun 6, 2006

KARNAK TEMPLE<<<<<LUXOR>>>>>THEBAN NECROPOLIS
EGYPT
28th April 2005 ( Thursday )
We arrived in Luxor from Aswan by train.
Click HERE to see some photos of this train journey.
We were told that we could buy the tickets on the train instead of at the station.
The ticket was just a piece of paper scribbled with a pen !
We really 'discovered' Luxor after seeing Karnak Temple during the day (as it's just near our hotel - Nile Luxor) & Luxor Temple at night (before meeting up with a VT-er Alaa).

INFORMATION...

Luxor (pronounced as 'LOOK-SOOR') is the greatest open air museums in this world ! It is certainly one of its kind where the ancient sits side by side with the bustling Upper Egyptian town.
Luxor was the capital of Egypt during the Middle and New Kingdoms.
The name Luxor was derived from the Arabic word : El-Uqsur.
Meaning 'the palaces' or 'the castles'...

Comprising of 3 areas :
The North (The Eastern Bank), where Karnak Temple is situated;
The Town Centre (The Eastern Bank), where Luxor Temple is erected;
The Western Bank, where the massive Theban Necropolis is being visited & excavated !
The Eastern Bank & The Western Bank is of course separated by the sacred Nile...
Hence, this town or small city (it's not that big) has been visited since a long long time ago !
In fact now, tourism is accounted for nearly 85% of the economy.
Now, the population in Luxor is about 150,000 people.
Luxor is about 9 hours away from cairo & about 3 hours away from Aswan, both distances by train.
Which is a good way in reaching Luxor as the public transports are only limited to the locals.
Reaching Luxor could be a stressful experience !
The locals have made a habit of hassling you whether you like it or not ! I guess they too learned the experiences from their ancestors !
Arriving by cruiseships are almost the same experience.
Walked pass them & Luxor would be open up to you.
Luxor can be wandered around & please keep your personal belongings to yourself.
When you want to buy a souvenir, it's best to ask around (by walking from one shop to another...) as you can compare prices & choose the best one that you desire.

I said to a hassler in Luxor :
"If ALLAH doesn't intend to give more to you, then just accept of what has been given ! Hassling would make people hate you ! You will end up having enemies than friends !
Do you want this ?! I am a Muslim & I should regard you as a friend but I regard you now as somebody that I don't want to see again in my life !"

The guy just looked at me blankly...
Left me & continued hassling other people !

Pros:"Luxor Is Laidback; 2 Great Temples Within A Walking Distance, Then Cross The Nile To Reach The Theban Necropolis !"
Cons:"Too Many People Hassle You !"
In A Nutshell:"A Good Base To Explore The Theban Necropolis !"
