General Tips: Proboscis Monkeys

  • Favorite Thing: Proboscis Monkeys are fascinating. They are known as Orang Belanda in Malay, which means Dutchman. They actually look like a person with their redish fur, their big noses and prominent stomachs.

Proboscis monkeys only live on Borneo and are extremely endangered because of the loss of their habitat and the poaching activities. They are easily spotted in Bako National Park, although they move fast from tree to tree and many time you just hear their intriguing howls.

    General Tips: Big noses
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: Among proboscis monkeys big noses are fashionable. The bigger the nose, the more chances males have with girls... In this picture you can see, although not very clearly, a dominant male with a biiig nose!

Their voluminous stomachs are due to their feeding habits, since they can only eat leaves, which require slow diggestions. They must avoid sweet fruits, as they can ben lethal for their diggestive system.

    General Tips: Bearded Pigs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Bearded Pigs are also unique to Borneo. They have become very confident with humans and they are easy to encounter roaming around the bungalows of the National Park Lodge looking for food.

    General Tips: Fiddler Crabs
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Favorite Thing: During the low tide, thousands of Fliddler Crabs get out of their holes in the mud in search of food. They are fun to watch with their oversized claw and their quick side-to-side movements.

    General Tips: Mudskippers
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Favorite Thing: Another fascinanting creature that appears in the mangroves during the low tide are the mudskippers: small amphibian-like fishes that are able to spend a considerable part of their lives outside of the water.

They have large eyes on top of their heads and extremely modified pectoral fins that allow them to walk both in and out of the water rather than swim.
