I travelled to Ghana for about six weeks in the spring of 2001, with side trips to Burkina Faso and Togo.

My trip to Ghana was certainly one of the highlights of my travels to date: a country with a rich history, exceptionally friendly people, very varied landscapes - and great beer to sip at the end of each hot day.

I travelled along the coast both east and west of Accra, and then worked my way north from the capital through Kumasi and Bolgatanga to the border with Burkina.

Ghana is one of the most accessible of West African countries, especially for newcomers to the region: it's a less extreme experience than some of the neighbouring countries, whose poverty can be truly overwhelming on occasion. It's also an extremely diverse country, with everything from the lively nightlife of Accra and Kumasi to animal-watching in national parks.
