Getting TO/AROUND: My first train experience in China was travelling Hard Seat to Hangzhou from Shanghai. It is very cheap, but try to avoid unless you want a real Chinese experience. Get your hotel to book in advance to avoid dissapointment. We arrive 2 hours early thinking we could get a seat, but it was the weekend of West Lake Expo and the train was fully booked. We managed to get Hard Seat tickets in 3 1/2 hours time. They sell more tickets that there are seats, so you may miss out on a seat. There are not many westerners travelling hard seat and I found some of the people to be very rude (the worst we encounter in all of China) The carraige was very crowded, hot and noisy, but for 2 1/2 hours it was OK.

Getting TO/AROUND: Our return from Hangzhou was in Soft Seat class. It cost an extra Y15 each (Less than US$2), but was well worth it. The carraige is more spacious and everyone has a seat. There are even lace doilies over the backs of the seats. We found the people to be much friendlier and some even spoke some english. (We did attempt some pathetic Mandarin). The old man sitting opposite us kept giving us food and we explaned to him in very bad mandarin that our tummy's were happy and we were full. An excellent journey.

That's why you dont see many well-preserved traditions. But you had nice pics and delicious Zhong Zi (they are not banana leaves, but a local reed leaves). Truly enjoyed :) |
