SF Zoo / Other Parks: San Francisco Zoo

  • The San Francisco Zoo is located on the southern edge of Sunset neighbourhood. I remember a few of the exhibits, like the Lemur Forest with Madagascar lemurs, the Gorilla World with gorillas housed in a cageless habitat, the rhinos, the Flamingo Lake (where the picture was taken), the Penguin Lake (this one was really fun with the penguins swimming back and forth together), the elephants. The one that I liked the most (mainly because I've never seen one before) was a little koala sleeping in a tree. Maybe this is not the greatest zoo in the world, but it can make for a nice afternoon in the city.

Off The Beaten Path: Angel Island State Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Angel Island is a small island in the San Francisco Bay, with forested hills where one can hike, bike, walk and camp away from the noisy city. The island can be reached by ferry from Tiburon and San Francisco. The ferry stops at Ayala Cove, where you can rent a bike. This cove is very popular for BBQs, being very crowded on weekends. But you get away from the crowds very easily, the park offers 12 miles of roads and trails including one trail to the summit of Mt Livermore (~780 ft). The history of this little island is very interesting. Angel Island used to serve as an Immigration Center from 1910 to 1940. There is a museum which can be visited at the old immigration station. The island also used to host a military base, now abandoned, so there are old forts and bunkers that you can explore. And finally, Angel Island served as a prison for the WWII Japanese prisoners of war. The island has a mild climate and can be visited throughout the year.
