When you drive the D999, your attention is drawn on a huge wall. You have better have read some document on La Cavalerie to know what it is. Here is what the leaflet written by the ''Conservatoire Larzac Templier et Hospitalier'' writes : Fortified ramparts, precious legacy of an era to be discovered in the village as it is today. Situated alongside the ancient way crossing the plateau from north to south and thus linking Orient and Occident starting from the ports on the Mediterranean coast, La Cavalerie's main activities lies on the cultivated land of the ''Templar plain'' and the vast area surrounding it; its geographical position requiring the addition of hotel and commercial amenities which can be expected of all built-up areas situated near major crossroads. This is the case today. The Hospitalier village still exists but at first glance, this is not obvious. The well-seasoned visitor will know how to discover it and all its riches of a fortified enceinte with its imposing door, XVth century houses and XVIIth century hotels. In the astonishing XVIIIth century church, whose interior resembles that of a vaulted sheep-fold, the remains of the Templars' church have been preciously preserved. |

Aren't they the best while travel? Well, sometimes they are located so close to places over-crowded by visitors and skipped, right? | Bwana_Brown Sun Dec 26, 2004 04:12 UTC Very interesting photos of this ancient village!! It is amazing the wide-spread influence the Knight's Templar had in the medieval history of Europe.
