Things To Do: Pananjung Pangandaran & Her Flower

The 530-ha "Cagar Alam Pananjung Pangandaran" (Nature Reserve Pangandaran) is South of the village of Pangandaran and takes up a whole 3-km peninsula. This favourite Pangandaran spot to travellers lies along the narrow isthmus of the peninsula with broad white sand beaches that sweep back along the mainland. At the PHPA office maps are available which shows all the different paths through the park, and which animals are where ...
An intriguing place, the park seems to have everything; stalactite and stalagmite, causes to crawl into caves, teak forests, shady banyan trees, grazing fields, myth-historical remains, seashore, abundant wildlife (watch the python), home of hundreds "long-tail Macaque", a beautiful sea-view out of the sweet water-place at the top ... at the brink of a towering volcanic cliff above the sea.
About 80% of Pangandaran National Park is secondary rainforest, and its most famous resident is the enormous Javanese Rafflesia flower. When lucky, you'll be thrilled to watch the extraordinary Rafflesia arnoldii/Patma, which grow up to one meter in diameter. She is the largest bloom in the world, although the one found at Pangandaran Peninsula is a bit smaller as her sister, growing in Sumatra. Watch your nose, because it stinks like "a gigantic rotten puffball mushroom" ...

Things To Do: Green Canyon

It is said that the Green Canyon, a scenic jungle area, is by far the brightest jewel in Pangandaran's crown. Two great guys told us to visit this place, after telling about the Javanese South Sea Goddess. One of Her votaries has been burried in one of the caves, so our cusiosity made us for a Green Canyon trip. And we got to a Miocene limestone reef which is riddled with caves and dripping with jungle, with in one of the caves some mysterious graves.
The best way to describe this awe-inspiring natural wonder is an emerald-green river bounded by rocky walls what I experienced again in Puerto Vallarta. Both sides rise up like skyscrapers and almost block out the sky. You may paddle your on canoe when visitng the Green Canyon. Get all info at the PHPA office and feel like Tarzan swinging from thick vines/lianes..

Things To Do: Pantai Batu Keras

It's hardly surprising that Pangandaran is a popular beach resort. Crowded at weekends and during holidays there can be a floating population literally of thousands on the beaches. Take a break and find an idyllic place along the Southern Ocean shore ...
Head off West and pay a visit to Pantai Batu Keras. The locals are all fishermen and, many of them rowing their boats out to the sea from the beach where you'll always find whole families working together to pull in the nets, or get the prahu's on the beach again. The people are exceptionally friendly and always interesting for a chat if they aren't busy ...

It is quite an experience to see the Pangandaran Peninsula from air. The famous Italy-form of the peninsula you can watch splendidly out of your plane-window.
So donot forget leaving Soekarno Hatta Airport, Jakarta and, flying over the island of Java to take a wonderful look outside ... direction South ...

Things To Do: PANGANDARAN Beach

Pantai Pangandaran (Pangandaran Beach) may be one of Java's finest beaches ... but you need to take great care when swimming especially at the East Beach. The Westerly Beach is regarded as better, but take care! Strong undertows can be dangerous even though a coral reef has reduced their impact. The snorkeling is here the best, the warnings are, too!
Secluded, tree-fringed beaches are to be found nearly all the way around the headland. Be aware the waves suddenly can take you by surprise when enjoying sun, beach and sea. See the dark area's on the pic. A sudden wave swept away the broad sand beach along the mainland.
So pay attention to the waves!!! In mind the destroying TSUNAMI of July 2006 ... peace for the lost souls.

The Batu Hiu Beach is about 15 km from Pangandaran by colt. Batu Hiu literally means Shark's Rock and points out the coastal rock having the shape of a shark. The legend tells about the petrifaction of a shark just attacked a fisherman's boat ...
The area is a picturesque rocky one, where you can walk in the nice park and, having nice views over the huge, violent waves which hit attack the Batu Hiu region. Especially for the young, romantic among us ...

Things To Do: IBU JAMU

|
Jamu is the traditional Javanese herbal medicine. All over the world, herbal medicine is used anywhere, and has risen dramatically. On the Indonesian islands, the surge has come with growing urban markets for traditional products.
You can buy "herbal medicine" at a crossroad though, better wait for the Ibu Jamu, a traditional medicine seller. These ladies walk along the houses every early morning, carrying a big basket full of heavy bottles. Try to lift it!!!
You may try a jamu special made for you. Tell Ibu Jamu your "emotion - feeling" and, she'll create you a tip-top herbal medicine to drink. I noticed most of the Ibu Jamu's are good-looking young ladies and wonder if the herbs get mixed with their beauty, ... or their female wisdom of herbs ... ... so what ? Love these herbal-ladies!

See the multi-coloured fishermens-boats of Pangandaran at the East-side. From here the boats leave for the Indian Ocean. When you are truly an early bird and get up before sun-rise you may join the special prayers the women do for their fishermen for protection on the sea; a gesture dedicated to the Spirit-queen of the Indian Ocean. And ... enjoy the stunning sun-rise too!

Things To Do: Ferry To CILACAP

This is a absolutely great, backwater boat-trip! From Kalipucan near Pangandaran (17 km North of Pangandaran) to the coastal village of Cilacap. It takes about 3-4 hours and this government ferry sails via Segara Anakan (a stretch of inland sea sheltered by the long island of Nusakambangan to the South!), Klaces, Mutean, and Candi, through an incredible wonderful jungle of stilted villages. The ferry is a small boat but there is usually plenty of room and baggage is no problem. *lol* ... make it your highlight!
