The Naritasan Shinsoji Temple is a key feature and a must-see for all visitors to Narita town. This temple was built more than 1060 years ago. The present main temple was rebuilt in 1968.
Upon entering the temple grounds, you will find a large hall on your left and some stalls along the walkway leading up to the temple entrance which is marked by a large red lantern (see below). As you walk up the stairs, you will come to a scenic area with craigy trees (like large bonsai), a tiny water feature where turtles and pigeons live and stone lions guarding the temple entrance.
Do observe the ritual washing of your face and hands at the cool fountain before entering the temple. Further in the temple complex, there is a three storied red pagoda, and another large temple hall.
During the festival months, for example New Year's Day in January, in February (Setsubun festival-start of Spring), Daitou Festival in May, and Gion Festival in July, this temple and the surrounding Omotesando street is a hive of activity for several days. During the rest of the year, the temple is quiet except for the locals who live here and day-trippers waiting for their departure the next morning.
The Naritasan Park is a traditional Japanese landscape garden which lies towards the back of the Shinshoji temple. If you are lucky enough to be here in spring time, you may have the chance to view the cherry blossoms. I was here in autumn and took in the view of crisp green trees and tinted autumn leaves in their multi golden shades.

One of the nice things you should do when visiting Narita town is to take a stroll along the Omotesando Road that runs from the JR Narita Station’s east exit through to the Narita San Temple. “Omotesando” is synonymous with shopping street. Here in Narita it is no different.
I really loved exploring the quaint shops that I found here. There are quite a few old stores with more than 100 years of history, many Chinese medicine stores built of Dozo(warehouse) style, and large wooden Three-story Japanese-styled inns. Many had open displays of local delicacies such as grilled eel, cute boxes of tiny sweetened fish, sweet & savoury rice-cakes and locally brewed sake. There were also quite a few restaurants (Indian, Tempura, Sashimi, noodle houses) and a few souvenior & clothing shops.
Towards the evening, it gets really quiet and I was informed that most of the shops here close at around 5.30 pm. Therefore, if you happen to arrive at Narita in the evening, and have only 1 night here (like most people who have an early flight out) it is best that you take your stroll earlier and explore the town immediately after you check in to your Ryokan or hotel. Trust me! There will be plenty of time for relaxation later on because Narita is pretty quiet at night.

Things To Do: Take a stroll around Narita town

I highly recommend that you take a stroll around Narita town. It is a very quiet and pleasant little town, one that is easy to get around and it is practically impossible to get lost. There are only a few main streets, lined with people's houses, a few shops, numerous restaurants and a few inns/ryokans.
Right in the centre were a few streets (Nishisando, Omotesando and Shinsando Street) meet there was a statue of a lady with a plaque (possibly the Sekitei monument?), but since I can't read Japanese, I can't be sure who the lady is (see pics). There is the Narita Kankokan (Narita Tourist Pavillion) building with a small park across the road. It was in early spring so the the leaves were showing their crimson beauty (see pics).
I was unable to visit the tourist pavillion as it was already closed but I understand that on Thursdays from 10.30 am, they conduct tea ceremonies for visitors. On other days, you may visit to gather information about the region and particularly about the Gion Festival when there are large scale parades being held (VT member dennisKL has pictures on this festival)
