Tartu is Estonia's main university town and the country's second largest city, with around 100 000 inhabitants. Tartu is a very relaxed, pleasant town, known as the intellectual and cultural centre of Estonia. Tartu is situated around 180 km southeast of Tallinn, the bus ride between Tallinn and Tartu takes around 2 1/2 hours, and the town can be easily seen on a day trip from the capital. The Old Town of Tartu is very different from the medieval maze you'll encounter in Tallinn - most medieval buildings in Tartu have been destroyed by wars and fires, and today's old town consist of charming neoclassical buildings in pastel colours - dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
