This isn't only a tourist trap, it's a trap for us locals as well...! Fjellheisen - the cable car - is a great way to easily reach the top of one of the mountains near Tromsø and the views from up here are excellent (see my Things to do - tip for more). Many people use Fjellheisen as a starting point for walks, and return to town on one of the many trails crisscrossing the area. (Unmarked trails! You need a map!) - and some ride back down to town on mountain bikes.

So *why* does Fjellheisen only offer return tickets!? (Or a one way ticket - *down only*!?) The price for one ticket is 95 nok, which is *pretty* expensive, and even more so if you only go one way. (The actual cable car ride only takes 4 minutes!) Quite ridiculous.

They used to have a tiny discount for senior citizens and students - but now even they have to pay the full price. Grrr. I think I'll walk up next time.

Alternative: Well, if you don't want to take the cable car to the top of Storsteinen you can always hike up. The cable car ride itself isn't all that spectacular, really - but the views from the top should not be missed.

I haven't done this hike yet, but it's supposed to be as follows: There is a trail to the left (north) of the cable car - from the Fjellheisen parking lot take the road northwards, turn right at the first corner and keep walking until the road becomes a path. After about 1 km the path separates - if you want to go to Storsteinen chose the trail to the right. It's a bit steep near the top. Hiking up to Storsteinen is supposed to take almost an hour.
