Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: For visits during winter, you'll of course need warm clothing - at least if you're not planning on spending your time in one of Tromsø's many pubs & cafés..;-) Woolen long underwear is good, a warm sweater, gloves, hat, windproof jacket... (More details below) Warm boots that will *keep your feet dry* are essential!
The summers are often rather chilly, and you'll need a warm sweater even if you're visiting the area in mid summer. But also bring light summer clothing for those precious warm, sunny days when the locals head for Telegrafbukta for a swim in the icy cold sea!
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: If you're going to spend some time outdoors during
winter, (and you really should, as the nature surrounding Tromsø is great) the best way to keep warm and comfortable is to wear a system of three (or more) layers: a base layer of woolen (or microfibre, but wool is warmer) long underwear, a middle layer of one (or more) thin sweaters ideally made of fleece or wool (add to or remove this layer when needed), followed by a windproof/water-resistant outer layer. (Gore-tex is great)
Multiple layers of clothing (the onion principle!) are more efficient for keeping comfortable than one very thick sweater, this way you can add or remove layers when needed. Always remember gloves & a hat - and those warm, water resistant winter boots!
