  • Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: For visits during winter, you'll of course need warm clothing - at least if you're not planning on spending your time in one of Tromsø's many pubs & cafés..;-) Woolen long underwear is good, a warm sweater, gloves, hat, windproof jacket... (More details below) Warm boots that will *keep your feet dry* are essential!

The summers are often rather chilly, and you'll need a warm sweater even if you're visiting the area in mid summer. But also bring light summer clothing for those precious warm, sunny days when the locals head for Telegrafbukta for a swim in the icy cold sea!

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: If you're going to spend some time outdoors during winter, (and you really should, as the nature surrounding Tromsø is great) the best way to keep warm and comfortable is to wear a system of three (or more) layers: a base layer of woolen (or microfibre, but wool is warmer) long underwear, a middle layer of one (or more) thin sweaters ideally made of fleece or wool (add to or remove this layer when needed), followed by a windproof/water-resistant outer layer. (Gore-tex is great)

Multiple layers of clothing (the onion principle!) are more efficient for keeping comfortable than one very thick sweater, this way you can add or remove layers when needed. Always remember gloves & a hat - and those warm, water resistant winter boots!

Packing Lists: What sort of winter boots should I bring?!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

  • Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I have been asked this question quite a few times - many people seem to be pretty worried about freezing their toes off in Tromsø.. :o) (Someone even asked if the pavements were cleared of snow, and should he perhaps bring snowshoes? Sorry, but...haha!!:o)

Waterproof winter boots (preferably with a goretex lining) are perfect. As long as your hiking boots are waterproof, they should do. The main problem with hiking boots, compared to proper winter boots, is that the hiking boots generally don't give you that good a grip on slippery / icy / snowy roads. Wear wool socks in your boots, make absolutely sure the boots are waterproof - and you should be fine.

Snow is - to a certain extent - cleared from the pavements in Tromsø. They're not completely snow-free though! And if it's snowing heavily, then you might have to wade through a little snow - at least if you venture outside the main streets. I have never seen anyone using snowshoes in town, though!! Hahaha! =D

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: If you intend to play around in lots of snow, you might need ankle gaiters (mine are gore-tex ones, and they're quite perfect). Some gore-tex pants have got built-in gaiters, but not all.

ok, ok, so 85 is a bit on the low side. fine, i'll make it a hundred - but that's as far as i'll go. maybe i should rephrase it to "100 reasons why you probably won't like me." is that a bit less troubling???=)
