Blåst: Glass Blowing Studio
  • Tip Rating:
  • Name of Shop: Blåst

In Tromsø you'll find all sorts of "the world's northernmost" this and that - and Blåst claims to be the world's northernmost glass blowing studio.... :o)

Watch the artists at work in an open studio - and buy lovely glass souvenirs and gifts. Three young Nordic artists work here - and they all have their own unique, individual style, so I think everyone could be able to find something they like in this shop. The shop is well worth a visit, even though some of the products on offer *are* somewhat expensive, and I also think the selection can be slightly limited at times.

    Opening Hours:
    Tuesday - Friday: 10 - 17
    Saturday: 10 - 15
    Mondays & Sundays closed.

Husfliden: Quality souvenirs - and knitting yarn
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Name of Shop: Husfliden

Husfliden, is a very well-known chain of shops - there are ca 30 Husfliden stores, in towns all over Norway. The one in Tromsø is situated in the town centre, right across the road from Radisson SAS hotel.

Husfliden is perhaps most known for its bunads - the bunad is the Norwegian national costume (more info on my Norway page, under "local customs") - each Husfliden store specialises in bunads from its local area; the one in Tromsø specialises in bunads from Troms and Nordland counties.

In addition to bunads, Husfliden carries quality gifts, jewelry and handicrafts - and a very nice selection of knitting yarn! If you're into knitting (or crocheting, weaving...) you'll find yarn (esp wool) in about a million different colours here, and also patterns. (Maybe you'd like to knit your own traditional Norwegian sweater, instead of buying one;o) Norway has several companies that produce yarn of excellent quality, wool yarn from Rauma is among my favourites and you'll find this yarn at Husfliden.

Most Husfliden shops also offer knitted sweaters, scarves and other clothes. Most products at Husfliden are designed (and many produced) in Norway, and some of the things you'll find on offer are produced in the Tromsø area.

Husfliden isn't a cheap place to shop, but the products are generally of very high quality. Highly recommended!

ok, ok, so 85 is a bit on the low side. fine, i'll make it a hundred - but that's as far as i'll go. maybe i should rephrase it to "100 reasons why you probably won't like me." is that a bit less troubling???=)
