Meland is a quite small municipality near Bergen. The island Holsnøy makes up the larger part of the municipality, which in addition to Holsnøy consists of a number of smaller islands, among them Flatøy and Ypsøy. Meland has around 6000 inhabitants. The administrative centre at Frekhaug, in the southern end of Holsnøy, is less than 1/2 hour away from Bergen city centre by car. (Via Krossnessund bridge and the 1610 metre long Nordhordland bridge which was built in 1994, and supposedly is "The world's longest pontoon bridge without lateral anchorage". ;o)

Earlier, most of the Meland inhabitants were farmers and fishermen - rowing into Bergen to sell their goods at the market..;-) There are still quite a few farms around, keeping the cultural landscape somewhat in shape - but the farms have grown bigger, and the number of farmers in Meland has been dramatically reduced. Quite a few of the people living here work in Bergen.

A fairly recent addition to the cultural landscape, is the 18-hole golf course at Fløksand.
