Fedje is a small municipality to the north of Bergen. The main island of Fedje is surrounded by around 125 small (and tiny) islands. A thirty-minute ferry ride connects the island community of Fedje to the mainland. Fedje has around 650 inhabitants, and the community has always relied on fisheries as an important source of income. The island is also home base to two whaling ships - Norway does catch some minke whales each year, in 2004 Norwegian whalers were allowed to catch 670 whales. I'm not going to argue for or against whaling, I'll just let you know that Fedje is also a whaling station - if you want to know a bit more about whaling, see the "local customs" tip on my Norway page. |
