Buekorps are groups of boys or girls aged around 7 to 20 marching through the streets of Bergen, wearing uniforms, drumming and carrying banners & wooden crossbows. (wood all the way, these are of course not real weapons..!;o) There are around 15
buekorps in Bergen, some of them have been drumming since the 1850's.
Until the early 1990's there were only boys in the
buekorps, but now the girls too are a part of this Bergen tradition. The
buekorps are marching approx. from March to June, usually in the weekends (often quite early in the morning, the loud drumming disturbing anyone trying to get some sleep:o) They do of course take part in the parades on the Norwegian national day,
May 17th, which is their main event of the year.
There's a buekorps museum in Murhvelvingen in the centre of Bergen:
Opening Hours:
Saturday 11 - 14
