The Amazing Race

by SharrieShaw - last update: Sep 5, 2006

Crew of Aera, Handicap Winner
Jan. 7, 2005.

60th Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race: It begins on boxing day every year in Sydney & ends in Hobart b4 year end. This year, Nicorette came in 1st on the early morning of 29th. I wasn't there to witness it. I was still at Devonport after visiting Cradle Mountain that day before. The next day when I was on a flight from Hobart to Sydney on Jetstar, I met the champs. They were on the same flight returning to Sydney after that amazing race.

Upon my return to Hobart from Devonport on 29th morning, I did get to see two other yachts came in... no. 4, Aera & no. 5, Seriously Ten. It was quite a spectacle. They had all worked hard & with that treacherous water which even sanked last year's champion, the crowd was exuberant to the least. When I left Hobart on the 30th, there were less than 15 yachts which made it. I was told the race started with 150 or more!

I'm not a fan of cruises, yachts or anything connected with the sea or beach. So, it's not easy for me to grasp the intensity & competitiveness of the people. But one thing I'm sure of, their determination to make their dreams come true. That's an obsession, a drive that make things happened... sometimes even miracles. It applies to my travels around the world & I'm sure the same energy applies to them. Hence, in some mysterious way, I could relate :-)
Courage Unlimited

These kids were very brave.
There was a display exhibit on the 29th & I enjoyed watching them manouvering the little yachts skilfully in the chilling weather. It must have been freezing down there as I was feeling the chill on the dock.
Some of the children were as young as 7 or 8 years old!
Amazing & really cool to watch!
