Lake Tekapo is a remarkable turquoise-blue coloured lake framed by the majesty of the Southern Alps located on route State Highway 8 (SH8). It's about 3 hours drive from Christchurch. This high country lake is 710m (2300ft) above sea level. It is gouged out by a glacier thousands of years ago. The lake is fed by the Godley, Cass and Macauley Rivers. This small village of about 350 people is an ideal place for either an overnight stop, or better still, spend a couple of days relaxing... there's no need to rush by! In summer, this is a popular spot for canoeing, waterskiing, sailing, swimiming(?)... In winter, the village is a base for skiers exploring the slopes of the Ohau and Mt Dobson skifields. |
