Hollywood Beach...We live in Paradise

Hollywood Beach...not Oxnard

Hans, Lori & "Brother Lumpy"
I get asked this question a lot. "Just where IS Hollywood Beach?" We are 26 miles South of Santa Barbara in Ventura County. We actually live in an unincorporated part of the county. We have shared services with the City of Oxnard.

Hollywood Beach, Hollywood-By-The-Sea are coastal communities within the Channel Islands harbor.

On the central coast of California is a lovely beach community called "Hollywood Beach". This is where the movie "The Sheik" with Rudolph Valentino was filmed. It has a broad expanse of beach and is most beautiful to visit in the Spring, Fall and Winter months. Summers can be quite foggy and cool. There is a local place for breakfast, Mrs. Olsen's coffee hut with 2 local hotels nearby. The Embassy Suites Mandalay is on the beach and the Casa Sirena is in the harbor and has a balcony view for the boat parade.

I was thinking just the other night We live in one of the most beautiful spots in the world, why do we love to travel so much? I think part of it is coming home. When we reach LAX and wait to board our flight to Oxnard I begin to get excited. Knowing in a short 12 minute flight up the coast I'll soon touch down on familar ground. The place where my home is, where the people at the grocery store know my name, at the local restaurant the girl knows I like raisin toast with my oatmeal, I know my mailman's name is Ron and the best night's sleep to be had is right in my own bed. Traveling is so much fun but nothing beats coming home to Hollywood Beach, California.

Living in an "unincorporated" area means we have no city services however, we share a postal zip code with Oxnard as well as their fire department.
Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus

Santa Drive By

The other night I was sitting on the sofa and I heard A LOT of sirens. I ran out onto the balcony and as far as I could see there seemed to be an accident up the street. I turned on the police scanner, but there was nothing going on, I figured that I did not have the new tactical codes programmed so I went back inside.

All of a sudden, the sirens resumed and two motorcycle cops drove by followed by a waste water management truck, I knew exactly what was going on, I ran over to the computer armoire grabbed my camera and frantically tried to get to turn on so I could take the picture of the "Santa Drive By." It was coming down the street so quickly I had little time to snag and photos. I caught the Oxnard Fire Battalion Chief's SUV streaking through and then all of a sudden, there he was, Santa and his sled replete with reindeer. I shot the photo and Santa turned to me and said "There you go! I hope you got my best side!" and in a flash of police and fire sirens and lights he disappeared around the corner. Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha it made me laugh and I look forward to next year for yet another Santa Drive By. (Note**Not to be confused with the Christmas Eve "Santa Fly By".)

VT Members who have been to Hollywood Beach

There is a cute Canadian couple that came to visit recently. My dear friend Hans aka waalewiener and his bride, my big sis, LoriPori It was so nice to have them here, we hope they return soon.

A visit to Hollywood Beach would never be complete if my favorite "Chicagoan/part time Indianan never came to stay. Dabs has managed two visits inside a year's time. I think it was those pumpkin pancakes or the lure of a backyard pizza oven. Kristi came back in October of 2007.

All I know is that she a) Laughs at all my husband jokes (this in and of itself is a small miracle somewhere along the order of the loaves and fishes. My husband is always in need of new material and loves it when Kristi comes to visit because he can try the "old worn out, not funny anymore, get a life, dear" stuff on her. b) She requires very little just stock up on Diet Mountain Dew and peanut M & M's and C)She appreciates my bed and breakfast. All in all she is a great guest and always lets me do the cooking! ;-))

Update: Nov 2007: The word on the street has it that 2 more of my favorite VT'ers have come and gone (always too soon) down this way. madamx and jojocan came to stay at the Mandalay Embassy Suites and our time spent together was so much fun. 2 great gals whom I hold in high regard. Another fine example of the kind of people you meet on VT.

If your name is "Steve" you can come visit me in Hollywood Beach"
\Steve B generously took me to breakfast at Mrs Olsen's Coffee Hut here in HB. We were also joined by his lovely mother, Ann. We talked of Steve's upcoming trip basically around various parts of the world.

I truly enjoyed meeting all of them and somehow predict that Annika will become the next "Kinga Free Spirit" or better yet...Iris2002.

I wish you safe and happy journeys , Steve. Good Karma all the way!

On Saturday August 13, I had the distinct pleasure of sharing my hometown of Hollywood beach and Ventura with another Steve spgood301 We had a delightful day on our whirlwind tour of the towns. I think I ran Steve ragged with visiting the local art show, breakfast at Mrs Olsen's, the Ventura Harbor, The Olivas Adobe, The archaeological dig/museum, The Mission San Buenaventura, walking the historic downtown area and the Anacapa Brewery.
